NFL Trade Machine: Cleveland Eyeing Marcus Mariota?
By Erik Lambert
Wait a second. Wasn’t it just a few months ago that the Cleveland Browns declared they had their future at the quarterback position when they drafted Johnny Manziel? Well in the NFL a lot can change in a season. After an ugly debut (zero points, two INTs and 80 passing yards), the much-hyped quarterback out of Texas A&M followed that by exiting his second game with a hamstring injury. Already the Browns seem to be regretting their decision, leading to rumors that they are very much in the discussion for possibly taking another quarterback in the 2015 draft.
Why shouldn’t they be interested? Cleveland is the only team at present with two picks in the 1st round, so they can afford to take one if they wish, or as some have hinted, possibly even package them to trade up for Marcus Mariota.
One can say that the Oregon product and Heisman trophy winner is a bigger, faster and better version of Manziel. He has the NFL level size, an strong and accurate arm, even more speed and is a polar opposite in terms of behavior off the field.
Many will judge the Cleveland Browns for taking Johnny Manziel in the first place, which is the reality of pro football but that cannot and should not stop them from continuing their efforts to get the most important position on their team settled. That includes going the NFL trade route.
