Alabama’s Amari Cooper Shreds Auburn Defense
This year’s Alabama-Auburn showdown in the Iron Bowl wasn’t exactly your typical SEC defensive showdown, as the Crimson Tide overcame a variety of mistakes to beat the Tigers 55-44. As incredible as that score is for a major SEC game, even more incredible was the performance of wide receiver Amari Cooper, who even had offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin calling touchdowns before he even separated from his routes.
It was an awesome performance from Cooper, perhaps his last one in front of the Alabama faithful as a member of the Tide. Cooper is widely considered the best wide receiver in college football, and finished this game with 13 catches for 224 yards and three touchdowns.
Like the title says — he absolutely shredded Auburn.
Cooper is no stranger to great success in big spots, and after going the whole month of November without a game of 100 yards receiving, he blew up on Saturday night against the Auburn defense.
Cooper’s game reminds me somewhat of Antonio Brown or Emmanuel Sanders. He’s not the biggest receiver, but he gets separation with ease and is able to make ridiculous catches and in high volume quantities. Of course, Cooper is bigger than either Brown or Sanders, but that’s just a bit of what I see in his game. He’s effective after the catch, in the intermediate, over the middle, deep down the field, and does just about everything really, really well.
When you talk about a receiver with a complete game, Cooper has it. This is a guy who is going to be a really high pick in next year’s NFL Draft, and he’s going to instantly upgrade some team’s offensive arsenal. It was a great game for him and a great win for Alabama. Cooper was a bright, shining star in this one.
