Not a lot of things have gone as hoped for Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion in 2014. Instead of becoming a true threat for the 2015 NFL draft, he has struggled all year. Part of the problem isn’t his ability so much as the unforeseen changes around him. Mannion not only lost his best pass target in Brandin Cooks to the pros, he also has dealt with diminished pass protection. In ten games this season he has been sacked 30 times. His numbers of 2,688 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions are all down from last year as a result of that.
However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. This trying season has given the senior a chance to see what life is like in the pros i.e. constantly dealing with pressure and changes around him. The good news is it seems Mannion has begun to adjust. That was proven when his Beavers stunned the NCAA landscape by upending #6 Arizona State.
Though he wasn’t perfect on the night, the 6’5″ quarterback did something teams will file away for later. He elevated his play when his team needed him. Trailing 27-21 in the 4th quarter, Mannion didn’t let the situation affect his willingness to stay aggressive. On a 3rd and 8 deep in his own territory, he stared down a blitz by ASU and lofted a pass downfield that hit receiver Jordan Villamin in stride for a 67-yard touchdown.
It illustrated all of the positives of his game from the good arm strength to the accurate passes and ability to not only see downfield but the confidence to go that way even in tight games against good opponents. It may not be enough to get him into the 1st round, but when the 2015 NFL draft gets going, don’t be surprised to hear his name early on Day 2.
