Jaelen Strong: Arizona State WR 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report
By Joe Wedra
Of all the wide receiver prospects in the 2015 NFL Draft class, Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong might be the most eye-popping when you turn on the film. He doesn’t have a complete game like WVU’s Kevin White, but he certainly has a skill-set that is going to catch the attention of NFL teams leading up to the Draft.
Here’s a quick scouting report on Strong, detailing why he might become a solid Day Two option for a team in the Spring.
STRENGTHS
For starters, Strong is a big, strong guy (no pun intended). He’s a large 6’4″ receiver that can make plays with his size, using a good vertical to catch 50-50 balls.
Strong possesses a good ability to get down the field on a fly route. He has very good speed and athleticism that helps him streak down the field, being able to beat many corners at the college level. If he shows elite speed in individual workouts, he’ll be just fine at the NFL level. On film, this is not an issue – he covers a lot of ground!
Navigating through small creases with his good athleticism, Strong is able to be an effective force in the open field. He has raw ability to make things happen.
WEAKNESSES
Strong needs to show that he has good enough hands to be a consistent receiver at the next level. He’s shown disappointing ability to catch the ball at times. I’d like to see him make tougher catches as well. Too many of his notable plays are relatively pedestrian opportunities.
DRAFT STOCK
Right now, I’d say Strong is a Day Two selection. He isn’t polished enough to be at the top of the class, but he certainly has skills that shouldn’t be overlooked. The 3rd round seems just about right here. With a good finish to the season, he’ll be a second-day lock.
