Dante Fowler: Florida DE 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Among the 2015 NFL Draft prospects that many are spotlighting is Dante Fowler Jr, a defensive specialist from the Florida Gators that has the athleticism to scare any opposing offensive coordinator at any level! He’s been a steady playmaker for the Gators through his three years with the team, and some have called him the best defensive star in the upcoming class.

While he might not be #1, he’s pretty close to being one of the most talented players of the entire group. Here’s a quick scouting report on a guy that you’ll be seeing in the NFL on Sundays very soon.

STRENGTHS

Fowler has a ton of power in his game that helps him solidify his label as a force on defense in space. He plays extremely hard and works with efficiency every outing. There’s no doubt that his love for the game is what drives him on the field.

The 6’3″ rusher uses his whole body well on the edge. He’s been able to use his arms to gain a bit of an edge when rushing man-to-man. His lower-half works well when he uses a strong step on the inside, often beating the tackle.

Fowler’s athleticism is unbelievable. When writing notes, I found myself using the term “freaky athlete” too many times. He knows how to use his feet to actually create plays on defense – his speed is unquestioned. It’ll be fun to see him run a 40-yard dash.

WEAKNESSES

One thing I worry about here is Fowler’s size. He isn’t a big guy, and that shows at times on tape. He doesn’t play big, unlike other guys in this class. He’s a bit unconventional because he has incredible speed, but doesn’t have the elite bull-rush power to continue pounding defenders play after play. That’s worrisome, because it provides questions to whether Fowler can play one spot consistently in the NFL.

DRAFT STOCK

I would imagine some team is going to fall in love with Fowler’s athleticism and find a spot for him on their defense. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Fowler go in the top-20 next Spring.
