Vic Beasley: Clemson DE 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report
By Joe Wedra
It’s been a wild year in the ACC with turnaround everywhere. One guy that hasn’t missed a beat is Clemson DE Vic Beasley. After starting his college career with high praise, the Tigers’ star defender has wreaking havoc constantly this season. He’s on pace for some big numbers; and the tape doesn’t lie when it comes to the kind of skill-set this guy has.
Here are some scouting notes on Beasley from this season. Can he be the first edge rusher drafted in the 2015 NFL Draft this spring?
STRENGTHS
It’s hard to ignore the speed and athleticism Beasley brings to his pass-rush game every week. He’s constantly beating guys off the edge, and using his creative rush to battle on the inside. He’s small, but his craftiness in the speed-rush game makes up for it.
Beasley is extremely quick off the line, something we’ve seen be an issue for certain rushers in this class. He seems to have a beat on the snap count on every down and doesn’t appear to take too many plays off. It’s clear he wants to be out on the football field and get to the ball on every play.
WEAKNESSES
While he does have the speed that other 2015 edge rushers have, Beasley is often knocked due to his size. You can see his smaller frame often over-matched by opposing offensive tackles, forcing him to win with elite strength that he doesn’t have. He’s doing his best to use his agility to make up for this, but teams will spotlight this on their scouting reports heading into the Draft.
DRAFT STOCK
You could make a lot of different arguments with Beasley regarding where he’ll be taken. Some say his game doesn’t have many flaws, while others can’t get over his different style of pass rush. Either way, he should have a first-round grade with most teams with a ceiling of the top-10.
