Randy Gregory: Nebraska DE 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report
By Joe Wedra
As we inch closer to the 2015 NFL Draft (still months away, but let’s do this…) we’ve been taking a look at some of the hot prospects to watch and giving some scouting reports on what to expect from the NFL’s future. Today, DE Randy Gregory of the Nebraska Cornhuskers is spotlighted. He’s a tricky prospect to break down, but turning on the tape with this guy can bring some eye-popping plays at the drop of a hat.
Here’s a quick breakdown of his game, including where his draft stock could currently be:
STRENGTHS
Gregory’s long, athletic build helps him play an extremely athletic game. He isn’t going to overpower anybody due to huge bulk, but he will get the job done thanks to his body-type.
He has better strength than first seen on tape. He’s always freaky quick in space, but when he can combine that with strength, he’s tough to stop. This balance has been a big reason he’s been so highly touted.
One of the biggest things I enjoy about Gregory’s game is his ability to keep his head up-field when he’s getting blocked. He makes countless plays due to second effort…, sometimes something that goes along with his serious quickness in space.
WEAKNESSES
Gregory is a guy that is tough to scout, because every time a play starts, it feels like he should be stopped on every play. He’ll often be inconsistent in his first step, making his quickness off of the ball a question. This isn’t a huge deal, but it’s something to watch. While sometimes looking like he’s inexperienced, Gregory should get much better as an edge-rusher with more reps.
DRAFT STOCK
As things stand currently, Gregory certainly looks like a first-round pick. He has some competition at the defensive line spot, but he’s standing out to be one of the best. If he stacks on a few more “dynamite performances”, he’ll be in talks to go top-10.
