Marcus Peters: Washington CB 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report

CB Marcus Peters from Washington has some traits that remind me of Richard Sherman. High praise? Probably. But if he continues progression with the skills that he has, it’s likely that Peters, like Seattle’s shutdown corner, can be a dominant starting cornerback in the NFL for years. It’s a bit of a stretch, but Peters could be the best cornerback to come from the 2015 NFL Draft by far.

Here’s a quick scouting report from a guy you’ll be seeing on Sundays very soon… Can he be the guy to finally shut down Calvin Johnson?

STRENGTHS

Peters’ size is what stands out immediately after turning on the tape. Standing at 6’0″, weighing in at 190 pounds, the corner looks like the typical modern-era cornerback that teams will be looking for. In a league where covering mammoth receivers is tough, Peters has the physical traits to keep up with ease.

The tackling ability that Peters possesses is absolutely incredible. It’s clear that he has a solid understanding of what to do when he’s going for a tackle in open space, something some corners will often lack in the NFL. Teams will like this leading up to the individual workout process – one issue not to worry about.

I wanted to list Peters’ speed as a strength, but as I continue to scout young defensive backs, it’s clear that anyone without above-average speed is going to fall down Draft boards. His speed is simply an area that teams don’t have to worry about.

WEAKNESSES

Peters certainly looks like a top-10 pick. The only red flags here come in his aggressive game – sometimes something that can get too aggressive. I can see the potential for pass interference calls at the next level. I wouldn’t worry too much about this, but it’s an area to keep an eye on. Truthfully, it’s hard to find too many flaws here. I wouldn’t rule out Peters going top-5 if the opportunity is there.
