Andrus Peat: Stanford OT 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report
By Joe Wedra
Stanford OT Andrus Peat is currently headlining the 2015 NFL Draft class at the tackle spot. While in 2014 we had a class full of powerhouse offensive lineman on the inside and outside, thing year brings a challenge when scouting the group as a whole. There are countless inconsistent players at the top, including Peat.
Here’s a quick scouting report on the future NFL lineman, including few other thoughts from the rest of the staff.
STRENGTHS
Peat’s size isn’t an issue. Standing at 6’7″ (listed height), he has a big frame that allows him to fill a big space just lining up on the line of scrimmage. He’s not a massive prospect bulk-wise, but he has a nice build that will help him at the next level.
David Shaw is a huge fan of Peat’s after coaching him for several seasons. According to NFL.com, Shaw thinks he can be as good as Jonathan Ogden:
"“I don’t know if there’s been anybody else in our conference, in the last eight years, that is as good as Andrus Peat has been and can be. In my entire career, nine years in the NFL, the only offensive lineman that was a step above of where Andrus can be is Jonathan Ogden — one of the best tackles to ever play,” Shaw said Thursday at Pac-12 Media Days. “Besides that special, special player, he’s the most talented I’ve ever been around."
Some other things to note: he is more mobile than most would think, he uses his legs well, and is a strong competitor that has some fire in his game at times.
WEAKNESSES
These are hard to come by here, as Peat plays a pretty strong game on film. His balance and ability to stay upright is something to watch. He often will get a little mixed up with his lower half and balance, causing him to miss blocks. Other than that, his overall framework should be enough to get him some good looks as a potential first rounder.
DRAFT STOCK
Combine and pro-day workouts will be big for Peat. Right now, I see him as a borderline first-rounder. I can’t see any team labeling him a top-5 pick as things currently stand.
