Baylor defensive end Shawn Oakman is quite a sight to see if you’re a football fan. At 6’9″ 280 pounds, this guy is rock solid, humongous, quick, and relentless in pursuit. As a redshirt sophomore (not a starter) he racked up 12.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles, and a blocked kick. As a junior, he’s picked up where he left off, this time as a full-time player.
Oakman’s physical gifts are merely part of the story with this rising NFL draft prospect. He’s certainly not under the radar, as he wouldn’t fit even if that were the case. Through six games, he’s got 24 tackles, eight for loss, five sacks, and a forced fumble. His length and quickness provide major problems for opposing offensive linemen, and the fact that he doesn’t always play too high creates even more problems.
This is a physical marvel and a guy that has all of the ability in the world. I see him as a legitimate first round talent, and you can see why when you watch him string a few plays together.
What really impresses me is the pad level Oakman is playing with in this video. He’s not too high, and he looks like he’s filled out his 6’9″ frame really well. He’s not a wiry 6’9″ like a basketball player. He’s a muscular, physical athlete with the potential to get even better. I think as you project him to the NFL, this is going to be someone that teams are really excited about. He’s going to affect every play he’s part of, and NFL teams are starting to see that on a consistent basis this season.
I think right now, you’re looking at a guy who is a top 20 prospect.
