Week four of the college football season is highlighted by Clemson and Florida State, a game that has an asterisk next to it because of the fact that Jameis Winston will miss a half for being an idiot on campus at Florida State.
For other reasons, this game is highlighted for NFL scouts. Primarily, the matchup to focus on is that featuring Clemson pass rusher Vic Beasley and Florida State offensive tackle Cameron Erving. Both players are considered first round prospects at this point, though Beasley has only six tackles this season.
With three tackles for loss and a poor performance against Florida State lingering from last season, this is a huge opportunity for Beasley to show NFL scouts that he’s worthy of all the first round hype. This is a very natural pass rusher who has to capitalize on what Clemson hopes to be an indecisive young quarterback in the first half of this game.
Erving is a top level offensive tackle prospect, so Beasley is going to have to pull out all his moves to get pressure on the quarterback, and FSU is likely to dumb down their passing game a bit and use a lot of quick throws and screens to offset the aggressiveness of the Clemson defense.
At 6’5″ 304 pounds, Erving will have a lot of speed and quickness to deal with going up against Beasley. Here you can watch Erving up against Oklahoma State this season, courtesy of the great folks at Draft Breakdown.
And here is Beasley against Georgia. You can see that first step on display. He’s so quick off the snap and is going to be a really good NFL pass rusher if he can add some more bulk and strength without losing his speed.
