Quarterbacks came through with big performances this week in college football. Who did their 2015 NFL draft stock a favor?
Carden leads East Carolina in upset of Virginia Tech
Even dating back to last season there was a subtle buzz building about East Carolina quarterback Shane Carden. Good size, poised, decent arm and aggressive. He had that look of a competitor. Not long into the 2014 season he clinched a signature win by leading his Pirates in a huge upset of Virginia Tech in a building they haven’t won in since 1991. Carden finished the game with 427 passing yards, three touchdown passes and the game-winning touchdown run.
John O’Korn brilliant in defeat against BYU
Houston actually has a very good history of quarterback success, at least in college but they may have another one brewing. John O’Korn, a sophomore starting for the Cougars, kept them in a tough battle with BYU. While he still has a lot of work to do on his game, O’Korn looks the part at 6’4″, 220 lbs and really lit it up with 307 yards and three touchdowns. This despite a grand total of 10 rushing yards from his offense.
J.T. Barrett takes out frustrations on Kent State
There is no question Ohio State will be feeling the sting of their collapse against Virginia Tech for the rest of the season, but for now they took out their frustrations on poor Kent State. In a 66-0 drubbing, freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett broke out with his best performance of the season, finishing with 312 passing yards and a whopping six touchdowns. Nobody expects him to come out early, but it is a possible sign of things to come.
Bryce Petty dissect Buffalo in big rebound game
One quarterback who absolutely needed to give his 2015 NFL draft stock a boost was Baylor senior Bryce Petty. After enduring a rough start to the season that included a scary back injury, he returned to form by carving up Buffalo for 416 yards and four touchdowns. His performance got the Bears out to 35-0 lead by halftime and keeps their national championship aspirations on track, along with rescuing his Heisman hopes.
