The San Francisco 49ers have been among the NFL’s elite teams over the last three years, making it to three straight NFC Championship games. They have only made it to one Super Bowl and lost to the Baltimore Ravens, and with some of their young core of players heading into contract years, this is a pivotal season for San Francisco.

Armed with a ton of draft picks, the Niners have not the roster space to hold every one of them, so they are expected to be trading up again this year if the right player should fall.

Player Movement

Players Lost

  • QB Colt McCoy (Redskins)
  • CB Carlos Rogers (Raiders)
  • WR Mario Manningham (Giants)
  • RB Anthony Dixon (Bills)
  • CB Tarell Brown (Raiders)
  • S Donte Whitner (Browns)

Players Added

  • WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots)
  • CB Chris Cook (Vikings)
  • OT Jonathan Martin (Dolphins, trade)
  • S Antoine Bethea (Colts)
  • QB Blaine Gabbert (Jaguars, trade)
  • K Phil Dawson (re-signed)
  • DE Demarcus Dobbs (tendered)
  • WR Anquan Boldin (re-signed)

49ers Team Needs

1. Cornerback

The Niners lost Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown to the Raiders in free agency. This is a top need for them in this year’s draft, and they could easily trade up for a player that could fit their scheme.

2. Defensive End

The Niners need to upgrade their defensive front. Justin Smith is getting older, and I think they could find an upgrade this year or at least someone to develop as a defensive end in their 3-4 look.

3. Rush Linebacker

With the question marks surrounding Aldon Smith growing in number by the day, the Niners need to start looking at alternatives. They drafted Corey Lemonoir and Tank Carradine last year to upgrade their pass rush, but they could still look to add some more competition here.

4. Wide Receiver

5. Center
