Mike Mayock has made some bold statements before, but this may be his boldest.
All year long, we’ve been ranting and raving about Jadeveon Clowney, but here’s the thing–he may not even be the best pass rusher in this draft.
At least, not if it were up to the NFL Network draft guru, a guy who is one of the most respected in the sports media business. Here are his words:
“You talk about a kid like (Jadeveon) Clowney, who’s just got superhuman abilities, versus this kid, and if I had a choice between the two, I think I’m taking Mack,” Mayock said.
If he would take Mack over a kid with ‘superhuman abilities’ then what kind of abilities does Mack possess?
We have all seen what Mack can do, and his consistency is astounding, especially against top level competition. Is he THAT good? Good enough to be a number one overall pick? Is he good enough to go #2 overall to the Rams, who could definitely use him as a strongside linebacker in their scheme?
Mayock raises an interesting point here. Schematically, Mack is probably more diverse. Athletically and physically, Clowney has to have the edge, right? In terms of work ethic and attitude? That remains to be seen.
We’ll certainly be interested to hear Mayock elaborate on this opinion as the Scouting Combine unfolds.
