As the scouting combine and NFL free agency draw closer, teams have gotten head starts on roster moves.  Here are some of the latest and what they mean.

Baltimore Ravens extend Terrell Suggs

This really isn’t a big surprise.  The Baltimore Ravens defense is heavily dependent on the pass rush and no player had or has a bigger impact on that than Terrell Suggs.  Despite being over 30-years old he’s the best player on that unit and vital to their immediate future.  Signing him to a four-year extension gives the Ravens stability.

Gabe Carimi signs with the Atlanta Falcons

The tackle position fell apart in a big way for the Atlanta Falcons in 2013, to a point where not even the quick-thinking Matt Ryan could cover up the issue.  Not only do they lack talent at the position but also adequate depth.  So to that end the team brought in former Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers tackle Gabe Carimi.  Draft in the first round in 2011, the Wisconsin product has struggled to stay healthy to start his career but he has talent and is still young.  There is a chance he could rebound.

Austen Lane joins the Chicago Bears

Corey Wootton is a free agent and Julius Peppers might get cut.  Combined with Shea McClellin moving to linebacker, it leaves the Chicago Bears dangerously thin at defensive end.  So their move to sign Austen Lane can’t be considered a surprise.  The 2010 fifth round pick played under defensive coordinator Mel Tucker in Jacksonville and has the size and bulk to fit the Bears scheme.  In a limited capacity he has proven productive but this move is purely for depth reasons.

David Wilson staying with the New York Giants

Everybody wants to believe in second chances and it seems the New York Giants are willing to offer it to running back David Wilson.  The guy is still young and has the talent to succeed in the NFL.  It’s just a mere issue of staying healthy and also cleaning up his ongoing fumbling problems.  The Giants seem willing to try for that which is why reports have surfaced they plan to bring him back for 2014.

San Francisco 49ers negotiating to keep Anquan Boldin

Among other announcements around the league is the plan for the San Francisco 49ers to give receiver Anquan Boldin a new deal.  Nobody expects it to be a huge one at his advanced age but the action makes perfect sense.  Boldin was a key part of their offense throughout 2013.  His size, toughness and great hands are most welcome, especially if the team can add a little more explosion to their offense heading into this season.
