Top 5 Fits For Colt McCoy

facebooktwitterreddit

I’ve always liked Colt McCoy, how can you not?  If you can get past the “God-is-great” stuff, the kid is an intense competitor who just looks and talks like a QB straight out of Hollywood Central Casting.  He’s also pretty good.  Not the tallest, or the strongest, or the fastest but he has a quick release, throws a good ball.  He’s a gym rat, a film junkie, and he seems to have a knack for making plays.

Obviously now he’s out in Cleveland, the Browns have acknowledged that they’re seeking to trade him.  After watching Mike Holmgren operate up close in Seattle for a decade, I’m surprised.  His patience in developing Matt Hasselbeck was at times painful to watch, but the results were indisputable.  I could make an argument that McCoy’s skill set isn’t that far off of what Hasselbeck offered as a young QB, but Holmgren isn’t willing to give McCoy the same chance.  In fact, he’s ready to hand the franchise over to a rookie QB who’s going to be 29 years old in his first year.   Maybe Holmgren is feeling the heat to prove himself as a winning G.M., or maybe he just wants to try and win a few games before he rides his Harley off to another coaching job.  Whatever the case, McCoy is available, and historically when you’ve been cast aside this early in your career it’s seems nearly impossible to reestablish yourself as a viable starter.

So McCoy is likely looking at a career as a backup now.  I submit that he can and will be an outstanding backup QB, maybe even an ideal one.  Perfect guy to have in the locker room, supportive teammate, and talented enough to win some games if the starter goes down.

Think Jon Kitna 2.0.

So with that in mind here are my Top 5 Best Fits for McCoy.  One disclaimer, I’m not giving much weight to the current backup situations of these teams.  I’m just looking at teams/organizations/systems that would make sense for his skill set.

  1. Cincinnati Bengals:  First of all, the Bengals desperately need a promising young backup QB to groom along with Andy Dalton.  Secondly, McCoy would meld easily into Jay Gruden’s West Coast offensive system.  Finally, he wouldn’t have to move that far.  I’m looking out for his own interests here too.
  2. Houston Texans:  System fit, available weapons, and a starting QB that has proven to be un-durable.  And yeah, I just made that word up.  Use it… just give me credit.  Texas football fans would go ape-shit for McCoy in a Texan uniform.
  3. Dallas Cowboys:  Physically he’s a lot like Romo, who is also un-durable.  And then there’s my previous reference to Kitna.  And then there’s the Texas thing again.   This is too easy.
  4. New York Jets:  No… that would just be too mean.
  5. Green Bay Packers:  The Packers are renowned for developing QB’s, and McCoy is built physically like Matt Flynn, but is a better athlete and has a better arm and release.  He could flourish in that environment.
  6. Kansas City Chiefs: I said I wouldn’t give much weight current QB’s on the roster.  I lied.  Cassell is on the hot seat and McCoy has more upside than Brady Quinn.
