Chiefs Sign Rookie QB Alex Tanney, Trick Shot QB and DIII Legend
The Kansas City Chiefs will carry four quarterbacks heading into training camp, and alongside of Matt Cassel, Ricky Stanzi, and Brady Quinn could very well be undrafted rookie free agent Alex Tanney of Monmouth College, who is receiving his second NFL tryout since the 2012 NFL Draft concluded.
Tanney originally received a tryout with the Buffalo Bills, but didn’t make the team. I think his chances in Kansas City are pretty good, but he will have to earn the job on the field as does everybody else.
Still, it’s hard to ignore the production in college and just write him off as another DIII player. He set numerous records as a member of the Scots’ football team despite missing a season due to injury, throwing for over 14,000 yards with a staggering completion percentage of 82.6 percent. He threw 157 touchdown passes compared to only 30 interceptions, a rate better than 5:1.
But it wasn’t his insane collegiate production that really got Tanney noticed on a national level, it was his crazy video he put together of “trick shots” in some of his down time at Monmouth. You can check out the video here, and it’s definitely something that teams probably looked at and just sat there thinking, “wow” but it’s not going to earn him a roster spot.
The Chiefs could, in my opinion, do a lot worse than Tanney as a fourth quarterback and developmental prospect.
