NFL News and Notes: OTA Camp Week

facebooktwitterreddit

OTA’s are this week, yes, we’re getting desperate for some football, with that being said here is some reading material to keep you busy on this hot Tuesday.

I’m also learning to how to play with this internet clip thing. Let me know if you think it looks better than just the text I usually produce.

Lance Zierlein of the Houston Chronicle takes a look at 10 Texans to keep track of during OTAs

Including a couple of very under-the-radar types

3. Lestar Jean (WR) – Jean tore it up in camp last year and looked good in the preseason before being lost for the season and now we have to find out whether or not Jean was a camp warrior or if he has legit, starting potential.  Jean has the size and hands the Texans are looking for, but now he has to battle against the likes of DeVier Posey and Keshawn Martin for reps and getting on the field ahead of draft picks won’t be easy.  Jean looked fluid out in practice on Monday and I’m looking forward to see if he can pick up where he left off.

4. Derek Newton (OT) – Newton is getting reps at right tackle and the big fella is going to be a player in the future.  The question on Newton is whether or not he’ll be a factor this year or in the future.  Newton showed off his quick feet and good base during drills on Monday and he will be a camp factor come August.

The Impact of Tebow is ever-lasting— A Florida High-school student had his diploma witheld from him temporarily because he Tebowed on stage. Via the shutdowncorner

Chuck Shriner was disciplined for the move, not because it was slightly less timely than doing the Running Man, but because his mother, a teacher at the school, felt it would set a precedent for underclassmen. According to Chuck, she disciplined him by keeping his diploma and making him clean the gym.

“She was really mad,” he told Naples News. “But I think it was worth it.”

Chuck told the newspaper his friends bribed him $5 to take a knee in front of the school’s principal. I’m sure the building service workers at that place are kicking themselves for not thinking of a similar offer years ago. Some kid big-times the principal and they get out of cleaning the gym?

The Packers say President Mark Murphy is not going to be the A.D. at Stanford

The Packers deny a report suggesting that team president Mark Murphy could be a candidate to become the next athletic director at Stanford.

“That’s simply speculation,” a Packers spokesman told the Green Bay Press-Gazette. “There’s no basis to it.”

“I actually like this franchise. A lot. Very good coach, smart GM, and there is talent bursting across the roster. The Lions are potentially so good they could sneak past the obvious favorites like the Giants, Patriots and others and end up in the Super Bowl. Yes, you read that correctly.

But only if this team can harness what is an amazing lack of self-control. The Lions remain one of the least disciplined teams in football. The latest incident with the team again shows that coach Jim Schwartz has yet to solve the riddle that is Detroit’s inability to be controlled and coolly efficient”

That should be enough for today. We’ll have more information as the OTA’s go on.
