2012 NFL Draft Winners And Losers
By Bo Martin
Losers
Jacksonville Jaguars
Picks:
Overall 5: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma St.
Overall 38: Andre Branch, DE, Clemson
Overall 70: Bryan Anger, P, California
Overall 142: Brandon Marshall, OLB, Nevada
Overall 176: Mike Harris, CB, Florida St.
Overall 228: Jeris Pendleton, DT, Ashland
Summary:
The Jaguars started out on fire, they drafted their jewel in Justin Blackmon who fills an immediate need and should be a stud. Then in the second round the Jaguars select Andre Branch and seem to be building a really nice draft. However, all good things come to an end when they selected Bryan Anger the punter. Teams don’t need to draft a punter in the third round, more than that, teams who have so many other holes shouldn’t be making this move. The Jags continued their free fall but neglecting their needs in the OL and grabbing players with some very poor grades.
Seattle Seahawks
Picks:
Overall 15: Bruce Irvin, DE, West Virginia
Overall 47: Bobby Wagner, ILB, Utah St.
Overall 75: Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin
Overall 106: Robert Turbin, RB, Utah St.
Overall 114: Jaye Howard, DT, Florida
Overall 154: Korey Toomer, ILB, Idaho
Overall 172: Jeremy Lane, CB, Northwestern
Overall 181: Winston Guy, DB, Kentucky
Overall 225: J.R. Sweezy, DE, N.C. State
Overall 232: Greg Scruggs, DE, Louisville
Summary:
The Seahawks started off with a head scratcher by drafting pass rushing DE/OLB Bruce Irvin. Irvin is a one down player who has one specialty. I don’t really mind Bobby Wagner as a pick because I really live what I’ve seen. I also love Russell Wilson, however, I question the fit. The Seahawks still have a lot of needs and just signed Matt Flynn. In a value standpoint I think players like Jaye howard, Korey Toomre and Jeremy Lane were extreme reaches without much prospect at the next level. With a ton of picks I just don’t see how Seattle really established themselves as contenders in a draft where they really needed to cash in.
Denver Broncos
Picks:
Overall 36: Derek Wolfe, DT, Cincinnati
Overall 57: Brock Osweiler, QB, Arizona State
Overall 67: Ronnie Hillman, RB, San Diego St.
Overall 101: Omar Bolden, CB, Arizona State
Overall 108: Phillip Blake, C, Baylor
Overall 137: Malik Johnson, DT, Tennessee
Overall 188: Danny Trevathan, OLB, Kentucky
Summary:
The Denver Broncos entered the offseason with some pretty glaring needs. Many of those needs could have been addressed in free agency but they went all in the acquisition of Peyton Manning, which paid off. However, the holes still exist and they didn’t really do much to fill them in the NFL draft. Osweiler is a pick that they didn’t need to make with all the other needs. I understand needing a QB of the future but he isn’t that much of a can’t miss prospect. The only picks that I really like are Omar Bolden and Phillip Blake. The Broncos head back to the drawing board with some need still on the defensive line and offensive line. I also think the Broncos needed to find some depth at the LB position. All those voids still exist.
As a reminder, this is just my take on the draft. I’m trying to go at it in a unbiased manner that considered fits and potential. I’m curious to see what you guys think. Who are your 2012 NFL Draft Winners and Losers?
