Second Round Round-Up: Reaction To Every Pick In The Second Round Of The 2012 NFL Draft
By Bo Martin
Ok football fans we had another exciting round here in the 2nd. It was full of talent and players with great potential and I think there is a lot to be excited about. I’m not going to waste any time and Ill give you analysis of the picks that were made.
St Louis- Brian Quick, WR, App St.:
I Like the Rams taking Brian Quick. There are some great receivers on the board but I think Quick offers great size and ability to an offense that seems to be reliant on Danny Amendola.
Indianapolis- Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford
This is a No-Brainer; I’ve been mocking that for a while. If you’re making the investment in Luck, why not get his favorite target?
Baltimore- Courtney Upshaw, DE, Alabama
What incredible value Baltimore got here. Upshaw is a first round talent with elite pass rush ability. The Ravens have a reputation for a nasty defense and they are getting to the reloading point. Well played Harbaugh…
Denver- Derek Wolfe, DT, Cincinnatti
Dear John Elway, Jerel Worthy was there staring you in the face, incase you didn’t see him. Wolfe is a solid player though and really appeals to their biggest need. I hope that he does well but Denver might be in a situation where they’re gonna have a rough season because of an inept front office.
Cleveland- Mitchell Schwartz, OT, Cal
Schwartz is a really good RT prospect, however, it’s his versatility that has him going before Jonathan Martin I think. A guy who can play both sides, tough, and really great size. He is a tough guy who plays the position well and can play anywhere in this line. Better value around, but can’t fault the Browns here.
Jacksonville- Andre Branch, DE, Clemson
I like the value here, Branch is a great edge rusher in a draft where rushers were coveted. It’s taken some time to get on a roll but here we go. Jacksonville needed a rusher and got an explosive one. Good kid with good talent.
St. Louis- Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
Hot name with top 10 talent, Jenkins is a hot name in the second round. The Rams could have taken Claiborne in the first and there is a legitimate need for DB. Jenkins has elite skill set and has the best potential to be a shut down island corner. Wont be the playmaker that Claiborne will be but will be good enough to leave on his own.
Carolina- Amini Silatolu, OG, Midwestern St.
Hard to be upset with this pick. Silatolu is a small school nasty starting NFL guard. His size is great and he will add that nastiness to a team that relies heavily on the offensive line.
Buffalo- Cordy Glenn, OG/OT, Georgia
A versatile offensive lineman with first round talent. I like the pick because they need to start building up that offensive line to protect its investments. I really like Glenn and think he’ll turn into a Pro-Bowl NFL guard or right tackle.
Miami- Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
How did Martin drop this far? Miami might have considered looking here in the first round and now get him in the 2nd round. Martin is a great tackle prospect who will immediately impact the Dolphins. By the way, this is a great move to protect new QB Ryan Tannehill.
New York Jets (From Seattle)- Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech
Finally the Jets do something that makes sense. There is a legitimate need for a dominant featured wide receiver, queue Stephen Hill. A product of an option offense that rarely showcased his abilities, Hill is a complete receiver who can change games. A lot of comparisons to Calvin Johnson but he’s not. Still pretty dang good though.
Kansas City- Jeff Allen, G/T, Illinois
Maybe a little early for Allen, in fact, KC seems to just be targeting players they like. This is a fine philosophy if you’re sure of your guy. I like him as a guard for the Chiefs and they really need help in that position. He’ll be productive here just not sure you’re looking at anything but a good NFL starter.
Chicago (from New York)- Alshon Jeffrey, WR, South Carolina
I LOVE Jeffrey, I’m a UGA fan and I’ve been watching Jeffrey give us fits for years. Jeffrey was giving some scouts fits and is really a Jekyll/Hyde case. I do think that he can be a game-changing receiver; he has great hands and exceptional game awareness. Great pick for the Bears who are starting to get scary good.
Philadelphia- Mychal Kendricks, ILB, California
The Eagles filled a need with an underrated LB prospect who has been incredible productive. He does everything well and I can sit here and sign his praises for about an hour. He makes the Eagles defense instantly better paired with DeMeco Ryans.
Seattle- Bobby Wagner, LB, Utah St
Wagner is 6’3, that’s ridiculous, he is a great athlete and really fits what Pete Carroll likes to do. Wagner gives them a great all around player who can stop the run and impact special teams. Needed this pick and Pete gets a little reprieve for that horrid first round selection.
New England- Tayvon Wilson, CB, Illinois
Do not like this pick when considering the CB’s who are available. There are just too many proven and talented cornerbacks. Wilson is versatile in this ability to adapt to schemes and play all secondary positions but you have some top guys still available, could have nabbed him in the 3rd for 4th.
San Diego- Kendall Reyes, DT, UCONN
I had the Cowboys taking Reyes because I absolutely love him as a 5 technique. He’ll get that opportunity in San Diego who desperately need some help on the line. Reyes is fierce and consistent and can be a presence in both the run and pass game.
St. Louis- Isaiah Pead, RB, Cincinnati
What are the Rams doing here? I don’t mid the Pead pick because I think he’s a pretty good back and will compliment Jackson pretty well. However, Rueben Randall is still there and is a steal at this point. I like the pick but the value was better elsewhere.
Green Bay (from Philadelphia)- Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan St.
Worthy is an absolute monster who has sky high potential. He has his soft spots but I think he can be an all pro. Will likely find himself in a depth/rotation situation but can definitely become a great contributor with great potential.
Tennessee- Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina
Brown is a speedy linebacker who is good at sniffing out plays. Not exactly a thumper but his speed makes him intriguing. I’m not sure how he’s going to pan out but I’ve seen some good grades on him. He seems to always be around the ball and is well rounded as a linebacker.
Cincinnati- Devon Still, DT, Penn St
Still could have been a top 18 pick at the beginning of the season. Something happened with Still when he transformed into a slightly lazy player. Love his motor and LOVE his upside. Cincinnati is really getting it together and man is this team fixin’ to be dangerous.
Detroit- Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma
Broyles is a player that I love as well. Probably could have gone higher without the injury but he projects as a prototype slot receiver. Speedy with great hands and a great student of the game; like the fit in Detroit but don’t love it.
Atlanta- Peter Konz, C/G, Wisconsin
Love Konz as a center don’t love him as a guard. I think either way he’ll be a great player and I think he can be a Pro-Bowl lineman but is really an elite center.
Pittsburgh- Mike Adams, T, Ohio State
Like Adams, even liked him going at the end of the first round. A good tackle with good feet but does show some inconsistency. Either which was good value here and a good revamp of the offensive line so far.
Denver- Brock Osweiler, QB, Arizona State
Meh. This is a good fit for a player who needs grooming. He is outrageously tall and has good touch. He has only started 15 games but in that time he’s displayed an all around game as a pocket passer. I think the Bronco’s are happy to have him but makes me wonder what they’re doing for Peyton in a win now team. Like the fit, might come to like him more over time, but don’t know that I like the pick right now.
Tampa Bay- Lavonte David, OLB, Nebraska
I like his skill set and his fit in a quickly rebuilding Tampa Bay. David is a fast player who does everything well but nothing eye poppingly great. I think the fit here is good and the value is right on track.
Philadelphia- Vinny Curry, DE, Marshall
The Eagles are investing a lot on this line. More than likely Curry was selected because of a BPA situation. He is a high motor player who is amazing to watch. A good work ethic and good ability to get to the passer adds to an Eagles defense who is getting very good.
Baltimore- Kelechi Osemele, G/T, Iowa St.
Really considered a very good guard. I don’t think he has the ability to be a good NFL tackle but as a guard he projects very good. He understands blocking schemes well and is a great pick up here for the Ravens; a day one starter.
San Francisco- LaMichael James, RB, Oregon
James has been very productive at Oregon as an explosive back. James is good in the passing game as well as a “home-run” hitter for the 49ers offense. The Niners have become very explosive with this pick.
Green Bay (From New England)- Casey Hayward, CB, Vanderbilt
A good playmaking defensive back who might even be underrated. I don’t think he has the best measurables but he is a heck of an athlete who can play that ball well. Doesn’t struggle too badly in coverage but will need some coaching as he transitions to a faster game. Green Bay is good at getting the most out of it’s players and this is a good fit.
New York Giants- Reuben Randall, WR, LSU
Great pick up for the G-Men who are already explosive on offense. Mario Manningham will be quickly forgotten with a great receiver like Randle coming in. A free fall for Randal who is easily a top 40 pick in this draft. I like this pick for a team who is constantly getting better. Ill let Jesse take this though, he’s a Giants fan who is probably ecstatic.
