2012 NFL Mock Draft Round 5
5 17 152 Dallas Cowboys-Trenton Robinson, DB, Michigan State
previous picks: Fletcher Cox DL, Trumaine Johnson CB/FS; Ben Jones C; Bill Winn DL; Joe Looney G
The Cowboys need to add at least two defensive backs in this draft class if not more. In both cases I’ve given the Cowboys versatile defensive backs who can play safety or corneback. Johnson is big for a Cornerback and might project to safety. While Robinson is smaller for a Safety, but has terrific cover skills and could play cornerback. The Ryan family really knows how to use defensive backs and Rob Ryan will appreciate the versatility.
5 18 153 Philadelphia Eagles-Josh Kaddu, LB, Oregon
Previous picks: Michael Brockers DL, Mike Adams T, Brock Osweiler QB, George Iloka S; Marvin McNutt WR;
The Eagles finally draft a linebacker and the Eagles fans go wild! I don’t like to project linebackers to the Eagles because quite frankly they just don’t value them all that much. Kaddu is an athletic SAM backer type who should fit in well with the Eagles.
5 19 154 New York Jets-Juron Criner, WR
previous picks: Riley Reiff OL; Ta’amu NT; Bruce Irvin OLB;
Sayre is a big fan of Criner I’m meh on him. There are other WR I like better here, but few have Criner’s ability to be a threat in the red-zone because of his anticipation in timing the ball and catching it at it’s highest point and his size. There are a lot of smaller faster guys like Keshawn Martin, Jarius Wright, Chris Owusu who are well regarded, but the Jets already have two of those kind of guys. Running back is a definite possibility as well.
5 20 155 Tennessee Titans-Aaron Henry, S, Wisconsin
Previous picks: Chandler Jones DE, Bobby Massie OT, Nick Toon WR; Trevin Wade CB;
The Titans finally add a safety and a very athletic one to boot. Henry flashed brilliance at times in Wisconsin, but often looked loss as well. There is plenty to work with Henry if the right coach can mold him.
5 21 156 Cincinnati Bengals-Tank Carder, OLB
Previous picks: Stephon Gilmore CB, Courtney Upshaw LB, A.J. Jenkins WR, Cyrus Gray RB; Brandon Washington OL
The Bengals just traded away Keith Rivers because he was a depth player and they were paying him a lot of money, but that doesn’t mean they won’t consider adding a young linebacker to add depth. Carder is a pretty versatile player who can play at least two linebacker positions in most defenses. This is also solid value for Carder who will be drafted somewhere in round five or six if I had to guess.
5 22 157 Atlanta Falcons-Levy Addock, OL, Oklahoma State
Previous picks: Josh Robinson, CB, Florida; Cam Johnson DE;
While he’s not the athletic LT the Falcons are looking for he is a powerful and consistent RT type in the N.F.L. I haven’t done a study of this, but I’d imagine every team with at least five picks drafts an offensive linemen at some position every year.
5 23 158 Detroit Lions-Demario Davis, LB, Arkansas State
Previous picks: Jon Martin OL, Lamar Miller RB, Dwight Bentley CB; Nigel Bradham LB;
Demario Davis is another guy who can really play and is a favorite of both nepatriotsdraft.com and Wes Bunting. Nepatriotsdraft wrote
Overall, Davis is one of the most explosive and well rounded defensive players in this year’s draft. He comes from a smaller school, where not many people saw him play. Davis is always around the ball and plays with such power and intensity that there is no doubt in my mind he will make in in the NFL. He will be a fit with just about every team in the league regardless of the type of defense they run. Look for Davis to come off the board in round three and looking back on it in five years that could be the steal of the draft.
5 24 159 Pittsburgh Steelers- DeAngelo Peterson, TE, LSU
previous picks: Dont’a Hightower LB; LaMichael James RB; Brandon Mosley OT; Brandon Hardin S
I had to look up who the Steelers had at Tight End, which was a good indication to me that they could use another TE for depth. (Heath Miller I knew, Leonard Pope and Wesley Saunders are the other two). Peterson is a player who has a good deal of upside if the right coach can maximize his abilities. If Mike Tomlin’s not the right coach, no coach is.
5 25 160 Cleveland Browns (from Denver Broncos)- Devon Wylie, WR, Fresno State
Previous picks: Justin Blackmon WR; Nick Perry DE; Doug Martin RB; Brandon Weeden QB, Josh Norman CB; Travis Lewis LB; Matt Mcants T;
If the Browns are a looking for a guy who can create yards after the catch that is Wylie. Wylie is an undersized, but electrifying player who will get his first look as a return man while he works on his craft to get on the field. Another Wes Bunting guy.
5 26 161 Houston Texans-Tim Fugger OLB Vanderbilt
previous picks: Rueben Randle WR; Mychal Kendricks LB; Brandon Brooks G; Trevor Guyton DE;
Tim Fugger is a guy who could get drafted much higher than anyone expects and the word is the league is enticed by Fugger. Fugger has a terrific motor, which the Texans will appreciate, but also brings good athleticism. After the loss of Mario Williams I’d expect the Texans to add a situational pass rusher at some point.
5 27 162 New Orleans Saints-Omar Bolden, CB, Arizona State
previous picks: Josh Chapman, DL; Tom Compton OL
Bolden would go higher if he was healthy in 2011, but he missed the entire season. He should be ready to go in the 2012 N.F.L. season. The Saints need to add more talent in their secondary.
5 28 163 Green Bay Packers-Randy Bullock, K, Texas A and M
Previous pick: LB Luke Kuechly; DL Brandon Thompson, Robert Turbin RB; Leonard Johnson CB; Philip Blake C; Antonio Allen S;
Some team is going to take a Kicker at some point it happens every draft. This is also considered a terrific draft for kickers. The Packers have an excess of picks in the final few rounds so maybe they grab a really good kicking prospect.
5 29 164 Baltimore Ravens-Brett Roy, OLB, Neavada
previous picks: Cordy Glenn OL; Bernard Pierce RB, Brian Quick WR, Senio Kelemete,
Brett Roy is a DE conversion project to 34 OLB in the N.F.L. The Ravens have to find someone who can play opposite Suggs. They might hope that player is Sergio Kindle, but he might not be. In any case this is a position that the Ravens need to add more competition to.
5 30 165 San Francisco 49ers-Jonathan Massaquoi, OLB, Troy
Kevin Zeitler OL; Jamel Fleming CB, Zebrie Sanders; Jarius Wright WR
Jonathan Massaquoi is often mocked higher in mock drafts, but he’s just not a favorite of mine. The 49ers add him here even though it’s not really a need. The 49ers are not without needs, but they have a much fuller roster than most every other team.
5 31 166 Cincinnati Bengals (from New England)-Terrance Ganaway, RB
Previous picks: Stephon Gilmore CB, Courtney Upshaw LB, A.J. Jenkins WR, Cyrus Gray RB; Brandon Washington OL; Tank Carder OLB
5 32 167 Cincinnati Bengals (via trade with New York Giants for Keith Rivers)-Janzen Jackson, S, Mcnessee State
5 33 168 Oakland (Compensatory Selection)-Jaye Howard, DL, Florida
previous picks: Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma; Tony Bergstrom OL; Malik Jackson, DE
The Raiders take a chance on an extremely athletic defensive linemen prospect who can play in a multiple of fronts.
5 34 169 Baltimore (Compensatory Selection)- B.J. Coleman, QB, Tennessee Chatanooga
Cordy Glenn OL; Bernard Pierce RB, Brian Quick WR, Senio Kelemete; Bretty Roy OLB;
The Ravens only have two quarterbacks on their roster: Joe Flacco and Tyrod Taylor. I expect them to draft a developmental quarterback prospect at some point in the draft.
5 35 170 Indianapolis Colts (Compensatory Selection)-Mike Daniels, DL, Iowa
Previous Selections: Andrew Luck QB; Peter Konz C, Mohamed Sanu WR; Derek Wolfe DL; Oliver Vernon OLB;
Mike Daniels was Sayre’s best player available at this point so I added him to the Colts defense. I believe the Colts might go offense early, but with how drastic I expect their defensive changes to be to go defense often.
