2012 NFL Mock Draft Round 2-Panthers Snag Janoris Jenkins
2 14 46 Philadelphia Eagles-Mike Adams, T, Ohio State
Previous picks:Michael Brockers, DT, LSU
The Eagles take a player who is now considered a bit high risk and thus has slipped down draft boards. Adams is big and athletic with quick feet. He doesn’t have great strength on tape, but he has a lot of ability. The Eagles appreciate the value of offensive linemen. This pick might seem frivolous with the recent signing of Demetress Bell and the likely return of Jason Peters next year, but Andy Reid knows you can never have too many offensive linemen and the value is great here.
2 15 47 New York Jets-Alameda Ta’amu, NT, Washington
Previous pick: Riley Reiff, T, Iowa
The Jets don’t see a pass rusher worth taking at this spot so they go ahead with Ta’amu to fill the need for a nose tackle on their team. Ta’amu was utterly brilliant in college, but also at times invisible. The Jets will look to get consistent play out of Ta’amu who has a lot of ability and a good risk here in the second round.
2 16 48 New England (from Oakland)-Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
Previous picks: Andre Branch DE/OLB Lavonte David, LB,
I’m not purposely targeting Cornhusker players for the New England Patriots, but it just happens to make sense. Word is the Patriots want a LB who can cover TE because their LB lacks speed and Davis can definitely do that and a lot more. They also need to consider addressing the CB position, where they are short on talent and depth. Dennard could even potentially play a bit of safety in big nickel.
2 17 49 San Diego Chargers-Vinny Curry, OLB, Marshall
Previous pick: Mark Barron, s
Chargers add a pass rushing threat in the middle of the second round out of Marshall. Vinny Curry has 43 DE 34 OLB versatility, and while he had a poor showing at the combine at his proday he looked every bit as athletic as he did on film, which helped him get back back in team’s good graces.
2 18 50 Chicago Bears-Devon Still, DT, Penn State
Previous pick: Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford
This is a pure value pick. The Bears are looking to add a 43 pass rushing defensive end, but instead take the potentially very disruptive Devon Still who has seen his stock fall a bit during the pre-draft process (or maintain nearly the same grade, but get passed by some more intriguing talents). Playing next to Peppers and Paea Still could end up being the steal of the second round.
2 19 51 Philadelphia from Arizona- Brock Osweiler, QB, Arizona State University
Previous picks: Michael Brockers, Mike Adams
The E agles are really a tough team to figure out in the draft. They do things in their own way. I could also see them considering running back here, linebacker, or secondary help. If the Eagles fall in love with a Quarterback they could draft him in the second round. The Eagles might be worried about Vick’s ability to stay healthy and the fact that he seemed to regress a little bit last year. They might also prefer Kirk Cousins to Osweiler, I, however, do not.
2 20 52 Tennessee Titans-Bobby Massie, T, Ole Miss
Previous pick: Chandler Jones, DE
The Titans take another player who has been connected with the Giants frequently. Massie is a big athletic tackle who has impressed people throughout the entire pre-draft prcoess. Massie projects as a RT, but a very athletic and high potential right tackle. I’m not sure Massie fills a huge need for the Titans who still need help in the secondary, but teams don’t always draft based on needs. Indications are Massie can go as high as late round one so this is terrific value for him.
2 21 53 Cincinnati Bengals-A.J. Jenkins, WR, Illinois
Previous picks: Stephon Gilmore, Courtney Upshaw
There are much bigger names available at WR here, but Jenkins is well thought of and for good reason. He has terrific speed and good size. Jenkins would make a better outside complement to A.J. Green than the rest of the available players here. I’m a big fan of Chris Givens, but think he might be best suited for the slot. Marvin McNutt and players of his ilk are possession WR, Jenkins could be as good or better than Mario Manningham as a #2 WR.
2 22 54 Detroit Lions-Lamar Miller, RB, Miami Hurricanes
Previous pick: Jon Martin, T, Stanford Cardinal
The Lions have drafted a lot of running backs recently, but haven’t gotten one to stick. Best is a really nice player when he’s healthy, but he’s had trouble staying healthy. The Lions are also a BPA team and Miller is that by far for me at this juncture. The Lions have been sniffing around running backs a lot, don’t be shocked if they go running back on day two.
2 23 55 Atlanta Falcons-Josh Robinson, CB, Central Florida
No previous picks. The Falcons run into a place where they don’t have any viable defensive end options unless they want to reach on a player like Virgina defensive end Cam Johnson. Instead they take the best athlete available on the board.
2 24 56 Pittsburgh Steelers-LaMichael James, RB, Oregon
previous pick: Dont’a Hightower, LB
The Steelers have lost Mendenhall for the season. James gives them another dynamic option on offense as a return man. The Steelers can continue to use Antonio Brown as a return man or return those duties over to James. I expect the Steelers to address running back early, whether they like James here or Chris Polk or whichever player. The Steelers do a good job of sticking to their board and while they have some young guys they might like at running back their running back talent isn’t great.
2 25 57 Denver Broncos-Kendall Reyes, DL, UConn
Previous pick: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor
Reyes is a bit over-rated to me, but he could possibly sneak into the late first round though I think it’s more likely he’s drafted mid to late round two. The Broncos really could use a defensive tackle after losing Bunkley to free agency. Reyes is usually considered more of a 34 DE, but teams can find ways to use good defensive players, and now a days most teams have an array of hybrid fronts they use so he’ll play plenty.
2 26 58 Houston Texans-Mychal Kendricks, LB, California
previous pick: Rueben Randle, WR, LSU
I think the Texans will consider Hightower, or Kuechly strongly in the first round it just makes a lot of sense. Kendricks is a great athlete and he’s a versatile player. Kendricks really wowed at the combine, but it’s not like he had bad tape throughout the year he was a guy who made a lot of plays. The Texans board is usually much different than most teams so it’s tough to predict where they’ll go, but Kendricks makes a level of sense to me.
2 27 New Orleans Forfeited
2 28 59 Green Bay Packers- Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson
previous pick: Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College
Packers again go Best player available and again they add a player that should help their defense. Thompson can play some NT, 34 DE, or 43 Defensive tackle. He’s never going to be an elite pass rushing DL, but he will be very, very solid and maybe even make a couple of pro bowls. Reminds us a little bit of Marcus Stroud.
2 29 60 Baltimore Ravens-Bernard Pierce, RB, Temple
previous pick: Cordy Glenn, G, Georgia
Ray Rice is unhappy with his situation and the Ravens lost Ricky Williams to retirement. I think they’ll look running back early, especially since there is usually a lot of value for running backs in the second round because of the perception that running backs don’t matter as much anymore, but they really do for the Ravens who do a good job of running the football.
2 30 61 San Francisco 49ers-Jamell Fleming, CB, Oklahoma
Previous pick: Kevin Zeitler, G, Wisconsin
The 49ers don’t have a ton of needs ,but every day could use more depth and talent at cornerback. Fleming has a lot of desirable NFL Traits. He has the size, speed, he plays with pretty good technique. Fleming really improved throughout the season and by the end of the year was playing at a first round level.
2 31 62 New England Patriots-Chris Givens, WR, Wake Forest
previous picks: Branch DE/OLB, David LB, Dennard CB
Givens fits the mold of what the Patriots tend to gravitate towards with wide receivers. Givens will be a younger better version of Deion Branch for the New England Patriots. The likelihood is that the Patriots still draft another WR even thought they added Brandon Lloyd and some other veteran guys.
2 32 63 New York Giants-Kelechi Osmele, G, Iowa State
Previous pick: Stephen Hill, WR
The Giants tend to fall in love with players who have unique abilities, which Osmele has. He’s athletic for his size and has extremely long arms. The highest player on my board-and it’s not close, is UNC LB Zach Brown. But with the addition of Keith Rivers and the presence of Jacquian Williams and Michael Boley I just can not justify the Giants having four weakside linebackers on their roster.
