Score one for forum members. A forum member popping off about his sources and the plans of a N.F.L team is not an uncommon occurrence. But for once it appears someone got one right. Yesterday, on the BigBlueHuddle forums a poster named SimmsXXI reported that according to a source of is, the Giants were closing in on a deal for Bengals LB Keith Rivers.

Recently the Newarkstar Ledger and the NYdailynews report that the Bengals and Giants appear close to a deal that would send Keith Rivers to the New York Giants, potentially in exchange for a fifth round pick.

Next time you gut a guy running his mouth about a good source he has in an organization, maybe he’s right. Or perhaps there is only one or two guys out there who have accurate information, so take what you see on message boards with a grain of salt, but at least in one case it appears than anonymous source is right.

As for the deal (apparently a 5th round) I’m conflicted on the move for the Giants. Rivers has a pretty sizeable base salary at over 2 million dollars and has suffered a few injuries that have limited his production. The Bengals added Thomas Howard and Manny Lawson so Rivers became expendable.

The question is where do the Giants play Rivers? Rivers has played most of his career as a weakside linebacker. The Giants had Jacquian Williams emerge as a weakside linebacker last year, and also have Michael Boley. That gives them three Weakside linebackers and no definitive starter in the Middle. Is that Boley? Is that Rivers? In anycase Rivers is likely better than any LB the Giants could draft in the fifth round.

The Bengals shed some salary at a position that is no longer a need, but a fifth round pick seems like very little to get in return.
