LSU Pro Day Recap: Draft News Links to Click
LSU held their proday recently with a guaranteed top 10 pick and a couple of other potential first round picks most notably Michael Brockers and Rueben Randle. How did they perform at LSU proday?
Saints Dilemma Hits LSU Proday
New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton and general manager Mickey Loomis have rarely missed a Pro Day at LSU — just an hour’s drive from the Saints’ offices in Metairie.
But both were no-shows on Thursday after being suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Wednesday for their roles in the Saints’ bounty scandal that put price tags on opposing players. Payton was suspended for one year beginning on April 1. Loomis got eight games. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt, who was suspended for six games, was also not on hand.
Claiborne shows off at LSU Proday
NFL teams have taken notice of LSU’s consistent talent pipeline, as representatives from all 32 franchises showed up to the school’s pro day Thursday. Vikings coach Leslie Frazier, Jets coach Rex Ryan and Steelers coach Mike Tomlin were all on hand to watch CB Morris Claiborne (5-foot-11 1/4, 190 pounds) make his case for being a top-five selection in the 2012 NFL Draft. The Tigers’ top prospect reeled off 4.43 and 4.46 40-yard dashes, improving on his combine marks. He also had a 35-inch vertical jump and a 9-9 broad jump.
Deangelo Peterson, TE (6-3 1/8, 242) — Peterson only ran a 4.58 short shuttle, deciding to keep all his other combine numbers. He caught the ball well and looked fluid in the positional workouts.
Jordan Jefferson, QB (6-4 3/8, 222) — Jefferson struggled in his workout but posted a 36-inch vertical leap and a 9-7 broad jump.
Ron Brooks, CB (5-10 1/2, 190) — Brooks ran a 4.56 short shuttle and 7.23 three-cone drill and recorded a 38-inch vertical leap and 10-2 broad, 4.56 short. He looked good in the position drills.
Former LSU Players improve times at proday before scouts
The title confused me because while they are all technically all former players they are refering to the players who played on the team 2011 and the players who are looking to get drafted in the first round still.
All three cited the comforts of home as helping them relax and perform well. It didn’t hurt that several former Tigers now in the NFL showed up for support, among them Patrick Peterson, Matt Flynn, Kyle Williams, Corey Webster and Ryan Clark.
Claiborne improved his time in the 40 from 4.47 to 4.39.
“I knew I could run faster,” Claiborne said. “I wanted to come out today and show that I’m that 4.3 guy. I felt very comfortable. It was just like another day at practice.
“I worked on my start and trying to stay relaxed. If you go back and look at the tape, you can see how tight I was, looking like a devil because my face was all wound up and all that. I felt I shouldn’t have run it at Indy, when I first got down on the line to run I should have stood up and started over.”
Claiborne said now that Pro Day is over, he will have surgery for torn ligaments in his left wrist before rehabbing and attending private workouts with selected teams. He said he injured the wrist in the 9-6 overtime victory in November against Alabama.

Randle made a significant improvement in his 40 time with a 4.42 and 4.43 after a 4.55 at the combine. It could make a difference between first- and second-round money. Randle is projected as a late first- or early second-round choice.
Claiborne, Brockers and Randle have each been invited to New York to participate in the NFL’s draft show.
