Seahawks Target QB’s
By Dan Viens
While the Bears, Redskins and Buccaneers grab the early headlines this free agency period, the Seattle Seahawks are quietly going about their business, trying again to find a long-term answer to their quarterback situation. Despite their assertions that they are happy with Tavaris Jackson as the starter until they identify a young QB in the draft, Seattle is reportedly set to host Chad Henne and Matt Flynn for visits.
My feelings on Flynn are mixed. He’s certainly shown flashes of brilliance in his two career starts, but he’s physically limited and may have overly inflated his value with that record-setting performance against Detroit. I’ve been hearing for months that the Seahawks weren’t all that high on Flynn as a long-term answer, but the market may be limited enough that his price has dropped enough to increase his value. This may be a visit to feel out the situation, more than it will be a full court press to get him signed.
Henne is intriguing, if only because he’s still 26, has the size and arm you look for, and has started 30 games. Problem is, he’s thrown 37 INT’s to only 31 TD’s over those 30 games. There are reportedly a number of teams accross the league who have interest in Henne, which may speak to a general feeling that he could be lightning in a bottle if given the proper care and coaching.
Neither player is a significant upgrade over Jackson, but the Seahawks just may feel that they’re close enough to contending for division titles that even a moderate upgrade is worth pursuing until they’re able to land a franchise QB in the draft.
