Pro Day Recaps: Georgia, Hawaii, UAB, Indiana

Today’s news and notes we’ll take a look at what happened in all of the Pro Day yesterdays, it was a busy day with four teams holding Pro Days.

Many of the Pro-Day results can be found here

First up we’ll start with Indiana. Formerly highly sought after WR prospect Demario Belcher came clean about why he was dismissed from the team:

With eight NFL scouts in Bloomington on Monday for Indiana University’s pro day, Damarlo Belcher decided it was time to come clean.

Belcher, who was dismissed from the football team nine games into the 2011 season for a violation of team rules, told the scouts why coach Kevin Wilson kicked him off the team.

“Failed a drug test,” he said. “I tried to keep it low key. They had to know sooner or later.”

At the time of his dismissal in late October, the senior wide receiver was within two receptions of becoming IU’s career leader. He had 189 catches.

At least one place has written that WR Dre Muhamed ran a 4.39 forty yard dash at Indiana’s proday.

Unheralded Jeff Thomas (a guy we think can play fullback in the N.F.L.) and be a special team’s ace had a solid proday.

Height: 5115

Weight: 231 lbs.

Bench Press: 20 Reps

40 Yard Dash: 4.75

Tony Pauline highlight’s OL Andrew McDonald

Two players performed well at the Indiana pro-day starting with offensive lineman Andrew McDonald. The versatile blocker measured almost 6-feet-6 and tipped the scale at 317 pounds. His 40 time clocked under 5.2 seconds. His vertical jump was 28.5 inches and McDonald looked good in position drills. He’s getting consideration at both guard and tackle from teams.

Next up is the big Pro-day draw: Georgia.

From Tony Pauline again

The workout is complete at Georgia and by all accounts Cordy Glenn once again impressed coaches on hand. There’s a feeling in the scouting community Glenn is headed into the top half of round one, possibly to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Georgia Pro-day was well represented

There were a total of 46 NFL scouts on hand, representing every team with the exception of the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears.

The most notable appearance was made by Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith, who has made Georgia’s Pro Day a regular stop since his tenure began in 2008.

Brandon Boykin, the talented cornerback will schedule his own personal Pro-day, but benched yesterday, he put up 16 reps.

More on Charles from Sporting News:

Tight end Orson Charles struggled, according to NFL sources. One scout timed him at 4.71 in the 40-yard dash with the wind and 4.93 against the wind. Charles is a good athlete although thickly built at 6-3, 241 pounds. During the positional workout he looked mechanical running route although he did catch the ball well, sources said.

Charles will likely be a second- or third-round pick.

Unheralded defensive linemen DeAngelo Tyson made a strong impressed with a solid workout, according to NFL sources in attendance. He displayed excellent competitiveness and quick feet. Tyson is 6-2, 306 pounds.

Lastly, from Georgia’s Pro day was Kicker Blair Walsh

During Monday’s pro day at UGA, Walsh braved very windy conditions to make 9 of 10 field goal attempts, with a high of 60. The Jacksonville Jaguars sent their special teams coaches, who oversaw the workout.

The kickoff rules in college football are changing in college football: Kickoffs are now from the 35, and touchbacks will be brought out to the 25. The changes were made with an aim towards safety; since a greater percentage of catastrophic injuries occur on kickoffs, the NCAA is seeking to minimize them.

Hawaii also held their Pro-day yesterday and the standout was Cal-Poly CB Asa Jackson:

The Hawaii workout ended a very busy pro-day schedule on Monday though no player stood out. The winner of the day was Cal-Poly cornerback Asa Jackson who improved his combine marks in the 40, turning in a time of 4.46 seconds, and the vertical jump, where he touched 37.5 inches.

Vaught Matoga, Hawaii’s best prospect, apparently just stood on his combine performance.

From Buffalobillsdraft.com

LB Corey Paredes

40 Yard Dash: 4.55

Paredes is an undersized OLB prospect who was known for flying to the ball in the WAC. He’s a bit of a violent hitter so it should be no surprise to hear that teams also ran him through drills as a FB at the pro day. We’re [not] sure Paredes will get drafted but Hawaii has a history of putting guys into the NFL.

The other proday of the day was University of Alabama-Birmingham.  Their best prospect is OT Matt McAnts

Matt McCants, graded as a potential middle round choice, improved on a few of his combine marks today. His fastest forty clocked in the upper 5.3-second area and later in the workout McCants looked athletic in position drills.• Unheralded Terence Edge turned a few heads today. The offensive guard, who tips the scales in excess of 330-pounds, completed 27-reps on the bench, ran 5.2’s in the forty and touched 31-inches in the vertical jump. Edge is unlikely to be drafted, but rather will be quickly swiped up after the seven rounds by a team wanting an athletic, wide bodied guard.

Enjoy.
