Mike Mayock Not High on South Carolina’s Alshon Jeffery Compared to Other WRs

There are a few people that anytime they talk about football, I listen. One of those people is NFL Network’s Mike Mayock, who released his pre-combine rankings on NFL.com.

One ranking I took particular interest to was his wide receiver positional rankings, where he had Alshon Jeffery all the way down at fifth behind Justin Blackmon, Kendall Wright, Michael Floyd, and LSU’s Rueben Randle.

Jeffery had a down year compared to his monster sophomore campaign, and a lot of scouts think he needs to get in better shape to return to the player he was in 2010, which we highlighted over at With the First Pick.

Obviously, those are some pretty good players that are ahead of Jeffery on this list, but I had Rueben Randle rated as a second round pick, which would mean that in my estimation, Mayock thinks Jeffery is a 2nd round talent as of right now unless he has a sure-fire first round grade on Randle.

Also worth noting is that Mayock has altered his stance on Alabama star cornerback Dre’ Kirkpatrick, whom he previously had rated as the fourth best corner in the draft. He now has him ranked second behind Morris Claiborne, and ahead of Janoris Jenkins. Surprisingly, Montana’s Trumaine Johnson took over Kirkpatrick’s spot as the fourth ranked corner in this class, according to Mayock. Two small school prospects are in Mayock’s top five, so maybe he thinks that Johnson can be a Domonique Rodgers-Cromartie type of riser at this point in the process…
