2012 NFL Mock Draft Roundup San Francisco 49ers

facebooktwitterreddit

I looked around at 2012 NFL Mock drafts around the web focusing on on the potential NFC champion 49ers. We post at least 2012 NFL mock drafts every week so from time to time I like to give our readers some outside opinions. The San Francisco 49ers will host the New York Giants on Sunday in a game that no one predicted before the season. With the big one that Alex Smith had last Sunday and the fact that they will be selecting in the late 20’s quarterback will not be addressed in the 2012 N.F.L. draft. Wide receiver seems like the easy way to go, but I was curious what direction the other mocks on the web were taking.

Picking  31st Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

Braylon Edwards was brought in as a deep threat, but was a big disappointment. The 49ers don’t need a receiver with Josh Morgan coming back and Kyle Williams emerging, but it wouldn’t hurt to add someone with talent at the position. Mohamed Sanu would be a nice complement to the other receivers San Francisco currently has on its roster.

Picking 31st:

Selection: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

Explanation:

The 49ers released Braylon Edwards prior to the NFL Playoffs.  The 49ers have to get a receiver who can play across from Michael Crabtree.

Rutgers wide receiver Mohammed Sanu is a 2nd round talent that may get pushed up into the late first round.  Sanu is a 6 foot 2 215 pound wide receiver from Rutgers.

Mohammed Sanu had 115 receptions, 1,206 receiving yards, and 7 receiving touchdowns.  The 49ers should strongly consider taking Mohammed Sanu here.

Scott Wright: Draft Countdown:

Picking 31st: Selection: Cordy Glenn, Georgia

No organization has used as many premium draft choices on offensive lineman in recent years as the 49ers, but they may have to go back to the well one more time. Chilo Rachal is one of those former early round picks but he was benched in favor of veteran Adam Snyder and the right guard position was a problem area for most of the season. Georgia’s Cordy Glenn is a four-year starter who moved to left tackle as a senior after excelling at guard earlier in his college career. A mountain of a man with a truly rare blend of size, strength and athleticism, Glenn will elicit favorable comparisons to guys like Shawn Andrews and Andre Smith. The addition of Gleen would represent quite an upgrade in San Francisco and perhaps he will have the type of career that Rachal was supposed to. The Niners could also look to add a wide receiver to bolster their feeble passing attack, with Michael Floyd of Notre Dame and Muhammad Sanu of Rutgers the most likely possibilities. There is room for an upgrade along the defensive line in San Francisco as well and depending on what happens in free agency outside linebacker or cornerback could be a need too.

Mel Kiper:

Selection: alshon Jefferey, WR, South Carolina

Explanation: (Insider content)

"The 49ers got much better production out of the offense this season, but I still see a need for a big target on the outside, something Braylon Edwards wasn’t able to provide. Jeffery is an absolute beast, a guy who plays at more than 230 pounds and easily could top 6-foot-4 when he measures out. He goes up over corners and attacks the ball, catching it away from his body like a rebounder. The Niners struggled mightily in the red zone all season, and Jeffery might not be a burner but is the kind of player you can post up in the end zone to help solve that problem."

Thoughts:

Well like I predicted people made the easy call with the 49ers taking a wide receiver in almost every mock I looked at. That WR is Mohamed Sanu out of Rutgers. I love Sanu, but I think his abilites are in line with the strengths of Michael Crabtree and that they might be better off going in a direction like North Carolina Dwight Jones who can stretch the field a bit, or ideally Kendall Wright who is a speedy WR who can actually catch the football. I really like that Scott Wright when out on a bit of a limb to give the 49ers an offensive linemen. I think the OL of the 49ers has talent, but isn’t great and could use an upgrade. We’ll see how well they really are though, I suppose when they face off against the Giants on Sunday.

What do you think 49ers fans?

What other direction other than WR would you like to see the 49ers consider?
