Dallas Cowboys Off Season To Do List: Fixing a Defense that was just plain Offensive

Dallas Cowboys off Season Check List

2011 Outcome            (8-8)

The Cowboys were supposed to be in the playoffs and contending for a Super Bowl…well at least according to Jerry Jones and his non-realistic image of the Cowboys.  The hiring of Garrett as HC and than Rob Ryan as DC would be the coaching duo to put the Cowboys over the top.  An 8-8 season was disappointing but also should have been expected.  With a young OL and a porous defense this team’s personnel needs to be improved this off season.

Coach Seat Temperature

1 year in and Garrett is already feeling the pressure.  Jerry Jones is not an ideal owner/GM to work for.  I think he picked Garrett because Jones would be allowed total control over the team.  If Garrett does not get the Cowboys into the post season next season he should start printing out his resumes.  DC Rob Ryan did not have a great 1st year with the team and needs to work on getting more out of his unit.

2011 Draft Class Rating        (B+)

This class helped fill some hole in the offense.  OT Tyron Smith has the potential to be an elite LT if he builds on his rookie season and bulks up.  Bruce Carter was basically Red Shirted this season and should be fully healthy moving forward.  Demarco Murray was a big time steal who plays a lot like Darren McFadden.  Bill Naggy was okay at center and should improve in year 2.  The rest were decent backups.

2010 Draft Class Rating        (B)

Quality over quantity was the motto for this class.  Dez Bryant appears to have Pro Bowl talent at WR and Sean Lee is already one of the best ILB in the NFL.  Apart from those two there is nothing worth mentioning.

2009 Draft Class Rating        (F)

This class shall be named the class who shall not be named.  Seriously this class should all be out of football in a year or two.  Best player is Victor Butler who is a backup OLB.

Current Needs

Offense: OG

Defense: DE, NT, OLB, ILB, CB, SS, FS

Current FA

Laurent Robinson:  Robinson had bounced around the league until this season.  He immediately made his presence felt and was Romo’s first option in the red zone.  He should be resigned but Jones should exercise some caution since Robinson could be a one year wonder.

Anthony Spencer:  Spencer has been an inconsistent pass rusher since being drafted by the Cowboys.  If the Cowboys can get him reasonably cheap than I say resign him but if not than he is replaceable.

Bradie James: James is not what he once was but is still a solid ILB capable of being a solid starter for one more season.
