Original Tim Tebow Scouting Report for 2010 NFL Draft

Tim Tebow is the most popular guy in the world right now, it seems. He’s taken control of sports and is now making the Dos Equis man look like a funny footnote on history in terms of just how polarizing and interesting he truly is.

That being said, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at my first scouting report of Tim Tebow. I had written back in 2009 about how I thought he would be a good fit on the Broncos, but at that point, it may have just been more a dream than anything. Here is the first report I wrote on Tebow in a Denver Broncos mock draft back in January of 2010:

We can all think of so many reasons we don’t want the Broncos to draft Tim Tebow, but in all honesty, he’s going to be the best player available when we pick in all likelihood.

Rolando McClain?  He’ll be gone.  Joe Haden?  Gone.  Many see this as a reach of a pick, but not me.  With Tebow’s intangibles and arm strength, if the only thing holding him back is his poor throwing motion then I’d take the guy number one overall, and it wouldn’t even be a question.

Players like Tebow are extremely rare.  It’s not often you see a player so devoted to his teammates, so devoted to learning anything and everything, and a player who is willing to do whatever it takes to help his team win.

He is a winner.  All the guy ever did in college was win.  Say what you want about him being a “system” quarterback, but he mastered that particular system better than any quarterback before him, and he is arguably the greatest college quarterback of all time because of it.

Tebow is an All-American athlete.  He is an All-American student.  His work ethic and intangibles are off the charts.  His passion for the game is almost unmatched.  His arm strength is elite.

Seems like all he needs is the right coaching, and with the McDaniels brothers, he has it.  If I’m the one calling the shots, I pull the trigger on Tebow right away.  It looks to me like our coin flip with Jacksonville is going to hold a lot more weight than all of us think.

Someone asked me an interesting question today. They asked, “If you had to choose right now between having Tebow or having Andrew Luck and the number one pick, which would you choose?”

Knowing what I know right now, there’s no one I’d rather have than Tebow as a Broncos fan. In terms of evaluating NFL players, Andrew Luck is ahead of Tebow as far as where he is coming out of school, and I think Luck possesses that intangible quality that is needed to win championships at the NFL level. I have full confidence that he will be a good NFL quarterback and possibly one of the best in the league someday.

If the Broncos had gone 2-14 like the Colts, I would take Luck without question. Knowing what I know now, I’m not trading away Tebow for anybody. There are certain guys that you just believe in, certain guys you buy into. There doesn’t have to be an explanation for it, because if everyone agreed with my assessment of Tebow, then he might not be all that much fun to talk about.

That is the beauty of this business. I have had people unfollow me on Twitter and tell me it’s because of how devoted I am to Tebow, but that’s because I believe in my ability to evaluate guys, and so do those other people. I trust my judgment of Tim Tebow, that he has the ability to be a star NFL quarterback. I realize his completion percentage is poor and the way he throws the ball will not be featured in any instructional DVDs, but personally, I am going to take what Tim Tebow did yesterday over anything Matt Ryan has done in the playoffs, over anything Tony Romo has done in the playoffs, and over anything Joe Flacco has done in the playoffs.

Tebow is the best quarterback of his 2010 class, which isn’t great, but it counts for something. I think he is undoubtedly on his way to an illustrious NFL career, and what we saw on Sunday night against the Steelers is evidence that he is only getting better.
