All State Sugar Bowl Michigan Wolverines at Virgina Tech Hokies

Today the Michigan Woverines will take on the Virgina Tech Hokies in the All State Sugar Bowl. Michigan and Virgina Tech have both had good seasons and this looks to be a good game. The draft prospects for Michigan aren’t the same caliber they have been in the past, perhaps, but Virgina Tech has some real good ones.

Let’s check ’em out

What is italicizes was written prior to the season.

Michigan

 David Molk C (Senior RS):

Molk is one of the best centers in all of college football.  He is an extremely smart and gifted athlete, and has anchored the Michigan offensive line the past few seasons.  While injuries are a slight concern with Molk, he has proven when healthy that he is an absolute monster.  I expect him to be picked sometime in the 3rd or  4th round in April

86 Kevin Koger TE (Senior):

Koger has enough size and ability to be drafted in the later rounds. He’s had statistically, his best season to date, but still hasn’t had huge production which could hurt his draft stock.

Koger will need a monster season in order to be drafted next year.  While he has great size for a Tight End (6’4″ 255 Pounds) he simply has not seen enough action due to playing his first 3 years in a spread offense.  He will likely get picked in the 7th round if he does get drafted.

88 Craig Roh DE (Junior):

To me, Roh is one of the underrated defensive linemen prospects in the entire country. A guy I think figures it out and plays much better in the pros than he has in College. I compared him to Jared Allen in my scouting report, though he has a lot of work and has to show that same kind of 110% go all the time Allen has to reach that kind of level. Watch him today, I really like Roh’s game.

Roh, like Robinson and Roundtree, would really benefit by staying for his senior season.  He was simply moved around too much under Rich Rodriguez and will need to use the extra year to improve his skills as pass rusher from the defensive end spot.  His 6’5″ frame, as well as his speed, suggests that he has the potential to be  an elite pass rusher, both in college and at the next level.  If he goes pro after this season I would expect him to be a late 5th round selection.

68 Mike Martin DT (Senior):

Mike Martin is a bit undersized and doesn’t have great N.F.L athletic ability. He makes plays though because of his unyeilding motor and toughness. Martin is a mid round draft choice.

53 Ryan Van Bergen DE (Senior RS):

This year Van Bergen he has 12 tackles for loss and enough sacks. Bergen has great size at 6’6 288 pounds and is a major reason why the Wolverines have been good this year.

Van Bergen was also a bright spot on the defense last season.  He was one of the few players that could get pressure on the opposing QB, and with his 6’6″ frame, has the potential to be an even more dynamic player as he develops further.  While he is not as NFL ready as Mike Martin is, he has the potential to be a better playmaker in the NFL since he has better size.  I expect to see him go in the late 3rd round or early 4th round next April.

29 Troy Woolfolk CB (Senior RS):

Woolfolk missed last season with an injury, so how he bounces back this season will have a major impact on his draft stock.  He is really a complete mystery to NFL teams, who really have not gotten a good look at how he can compete.  If I had to guess when he would go next year I would guess in the 6th round.

Denard Robinson, Athlete

The most intriguing of Michigan’s pro prospects is clearly Denard Robinson the terrific running quarterback for the Wolverines. I, like many, don’t see Robinson as a N.F.L. quarterback, but there is clearly a place for him in the N.F.L. What we need to watch his is vision, he’s most likely going to be some sort of running back/wr/return man. Though with another year of elegibility he’s likely to return for next season.

Roy Roundtree, WR

Michigan doesn’t have that Mario Manningham caliber WR, but Roundtree’s ok. His numbers were bad this year with only 2 touchdowns and under 400 yards receiving. He’s also likely returning.
Virginia Tech Hokies

Jayron Holsey, CB

This is a huge game for Hosley. A player who is light, and hasn’t had the same kind of season he had last year. When Hosley is on he’s a ballhawk who does an excellent job of reading the QB and making a play on the football. However he is undersized and doens’t have elite athleic abilty. He is rumored to be entering the draft, but is first round grade from after last year is a thing of the past. If he can show a better than anticipated ability to play the run today he could rebuild some of that stock.

David Wilson, RB, Va Tech

Wilson is a game-breaker in every sense of the word. He is instant touchdown threat every time he touches the ball. Though, he doesn’t have great size he’s a better in between the tackler runner than players like C.J. Spiller were coming out of College. A really fast 40 yard dash could put him in the first round conversation.

Eddie Whitley, S, Virginia Tech

Whitely is versatile, but not in a great way. Some guys are versatile like Markelle Martin because they have enough abilities as both a FS and strong sfaety. Whitely is versatile, but lacks great N.F.l. ability. I think his stock has taken a hit this year as people question that and while he was once a possible fourth round pick is now probably a 7th round guy.

#19 Danny Coale – Wide Reciver, r-Senior, 6’0, 196bs

The most-solid hands out of any Tech receiver. Deceptive speed (in the low 4.4s) that results in a lot of teams under-estimating his ability (Nebraska 2009, Miami and FSU 2010). Will most likely be the starting punter as well in 2011 (you read that right). Probably the best route-runner too. Had best season last year with 732 yards and 3 touchdowns. Reminds me of a Wes-Welker type who can be relied on to make the critical catch. Will be a tremendous value pick for any team as he won’t be going until the mid-rounds.

Coale had similar production to the year prior and actually leads the team in receiving yards this season.

Jayme Brooks and Blake DeChristopher OL

Here are two offensive linemen to watch out for in tonight’s game. Brooks is what most people would refer to as a “finesse” linemen in pass protection, but has under-appreciated road grading ability as well.

DeChristopher is a little bigger and considered more of a road grader offensive linemen. Christopher has N.F.L. ability and will be drafted later rounds.

Jarrett Boykin, WR

Leads the team in touchdown receptions with 5. Boykin has good size at 6’2.

Josh Oglesby, RB

He has a chance to be drafted as a late round guy but is clearly overhadowed by David Wilson.
