2012 NFL Draft Compensatory Picks

facebooktwitterreddit

This page will report the 2012 NFL Draft compensatory picks when they become available. Until then I thought I’d list the free agent losses of teams and try to guess what kind of picks they might be rewarded. Like Colonel Sanders, Roger Goodell and the N.F.L. guard their recipe for compensatory picks.

I’m doing this from memory for today, I’ll soon go through the N.F.L. transaction list to have an official list. If you can think of someone now before I get to that point please let me know.

Even though compensatory picks are a closely guarded recipe it seems to be a collaboration of players lost, age of the players, and contract value from the other team. There may also be an element of playoff success while on the other team, though contract from the other team is the biggie. Players who are released do NOT count towards the formula either way. And I also don’t think resigning their  own free agents counts against a team either.

Teams like the Vikings, Giants, Raiders, 49ers, Bengals should all be in line for larger compensatory picks while team like the Seahawks and Eagles will not get compensatory picks.

The Jets who lose Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith would seem in line for a big compensatory pick until you realize that Edwards is only going to make 1 million dollars and Brad Smith has barely played. They still should get some picks though.

And then there are some things I don’t understand. For example the Rams lost Laurent Robinson to Free Agency who first signed with the Chargers who was then cut by the Chargers. You can sign cut/released players without compensatory penalty, so the Cowboys don’t lose anything for signing Robinson, but do the Rams get the carry over? I’d bet not, but I have no idea how that works.

Wikipeida:

In addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as “compensatory picks,” are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player’s salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.

If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as “supplemental compensatory selections”).

Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft.
