Should Robert Griffin III Be drafted Ahead of Andrew Luck

Every week Dan Kadar of Mockingthedraft and I have a little chat about the draft or football in general. On alternating weeks I’ll post our Question and  Answer session on NFLmocks and on the other weeks Dan will post my answers on Mocking the draft.com This week I was interested in his thoughts on the Skip Bayless push for robert Griffin III to be drafted over Andrew Luck if the draft were held today, Brandon Weeden, and the 34 OLB position.

1) Skip Bayless and Jamele Hill (as well as others) are starting to vocalize that perhaps Matt Barkley and/or Robert Griffin III should be considered for the first overall pick? Is there any validity to this, or is this more of the evil empire trying to launch a preemptive strike to create some sort of controversy surrounding the first overall pick?

I don’t think it’s some sort of nefarious directive on the part of ESPN, if that’s what you’re implying. Instead, we just see this happen every year with the draft. But normally it happens in February and March, not November. Whenever there has been a surefire No. 1 guy, discussion always gets kicked up by people saying who should be the top guy. The trouble with some of these people who have airtime to fill is that they’ll start believing their own conjecture. It’s kind of silly, but whatever. From a national perspective, they have to talk about the top pick because they’re not us and they don’t care about who the 187th best player in the draft might be.

Well I guess Dan’s not willing to join me in starting some sort of conspiracy theory, oh well. I thought the “Suck for Luck” thing was annoying, but starting the debate about whether or not Robert Griffin III is the top pick over Andrew Luck debate could be even more annoying if it’s starting already!

2).  The 34 OLB position isn’t considered very strong this year, who’s the 34 OLB player you think is the most likely to be drafted first?
If Georgia’s Jarvis Jones enters the draft as a redshirt sophomore (which is possible), he’d have to be considered the top 3-4 OLB. His first step may not be Von Miller good, but it’s impressive. I like the tenacity he plays with as well. I’m not necessarily saying the comparison is exact, but he plays a lot like James Harrison. I want to see what West Virginia’s Bruce Irvin does in an all star game or at the Scouting Combine. He’s done a disservice playing in the system they run.

3). One of the most fascinating stories to me is Brandon Weeden…we’ve seen age get overlooked before (Danny Watkins last year, Chris Weinke) how high do you think Weeden could be drafted?

I don’t expect Weeden to get picked before the third round. His age and the offense he’s coming out of is a concern. At 28, what happens if he can’t quickly adapt to an NFL offense? If he can quickly translate to the next level, I think he’ll do well. But at his age, he needs to come in immediately and contribute in some way to warrant a top 100 pick.
