2012 NFL Mock Draft Atlanta Falcons Mock Draft
The Atlanta Falcons are in kind of a difficult position they are a very quality team that just needs to bolster their depth for the most part and find their franchise LT because Sam Baker increasingly doesn’t look to be that guy. The problem is with the trade for Julio Jones they are without their first and fourth round pick so they will have to do a good job of finding value with only 5 picks.

2nd Round-Nate Potter T Boise State
Nate Potter is not an elite athlete, but he’s a smart player and he has a chance at playing a successful LT at the N.F.L. level for the long-haul, which is more to said abotu most of the players past him. It is hard to find quality LT outside the first round, but Potter could be the exception to the rule and why the Falcons could take a chance with Potter.
3rd Round-Brandon Boykin, CB, Georgia
The Falcons pass defense is not great and they get two fillings of the Saints and their excellent pass offense a year. They also need to add more talent in the secondary to compete with the likes of the Green Bay Packers in the post-season. Boykin isn’t huge, but he’s dynamic and he competes well. If he’s available in the third round he represents good value.
5th Round-Malik Jackson, DE, Tennessee
With the signing of Ray Edwards and the presence of the young Kroy Biermann this might not be a huge need for the Falcons, but they could use more talent there especially with Abraham’s retirement looming. Biermann has a chance at being a pretty decent player once he gets a shot at playing full time. Jackson is tall and lean with pretty good ability and could be a nice late round find.
6th Round-Antoine McClain, OL, Clemson Tigers
More talent on the offensive line. This team is reliant on their offensive line to allow them to run the ball and injuries could be devastating, which is why the Falcons will continue to add talent and depth to the offensive line.
7th Round–Quinton Pointer, DB, UNLV
Pointer is pretty fast and a leader for the UNLV defense. He’s a 7th round Free agent type kind of guy who is experienced and has some versatility. He’s not going to be a sexy pick that lights the world on fire, but he can come in and contribute immediately on special teams and can be trusted more in a pinch than a more talented, younger, developmental prospect.
Without a first round pick and likely picking later in the draft it’s going to be tough for the Falcons to have an impact draft, which is why I expect them to go with a more nuts and bolts approach and to add a lot of depth and special teams help. They will probably look desperately for their OT of the future and could even consider trying to trade up to secure that player.
