2012 NFL Mock Draft Week 11 Update: Dolphins Can’t Resist Robert Griffin III,
17. Buffalo Bills (5-4)-Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
The argument here is for an outside linebacker to rush the passer and the team probably feels comfortable with Demetrius Bell and Chris Hariston, but that’s a bit of a mistake. Mike Adams has uncommon length and athletic feet and could be drafted ahead of Jonathan Martin and Riley Reiff from what I’ve heard. I’m not buying that yet, but keep a look-out for Adams to rise way up the draft boards especially if he has an impressive pre-draft process.
18. Cleveland – from Atlanta (5-4)-Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma Sooners
With Landry Jones falling all the way down to this post the Browns can’t resist taking Andrew Luck. Colt McCoy looks like nothing more than a serviceable N.F.L. quarterback and maybe that will be good enough for the Browns, but they should strive for better. I’ve been “vocal” (what’s the equivalent for vocal through words on the internet?) about my concerns for Landry Jones. Still, he could easily be drafted in the top 10, let alone the top 20. With this first round, based on many big boards, the Browns have gotten tremendous value.
19. Cincinnati Bengals (6-3)-Zach Brown, LB, UNC
With the loss of Leon Hall for the season and the recent departure of Jonathan Joseph cornerback has suddenly become a need. Brown has intriguing athleticism and an ability to play multiple linebacker spots. Brown will excel in coverage and as a blitzer in the N.F.L. Manny Lawson is not permanent fix for the Bengals, just a stop-gap and Brown could be very high on a lot of big boards.
20 Detroit Lions (6-3)-Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin
I like Konz much more than I like Mike Pouncey from last year and with the Steelers and Dolphins each drafting centers fairly early in the last two drafts (other centers have gone in the first round recently as well) a precedent has been established for center to be a position that can be drafted in the first round. Konz would be an upgrade to the interior of the Lions offensive line, a line that is playing poorly enough that it might cost the Lions a playoff spot. Manti Te’o is a possibility as well if the Lions won’t to improve their linebacker corps.
21. Houston Texans (7-3)-Dwight Jones, WR, North Carolina
Jones is having a really nice season and is pushing his stock into the first round range. Jones has ideal size and an ability to make plays down the field. The Texans offense hasn’t struggled with Johnson’s injury, but the pass offense hasn’t’ been the same. Imagine how dynamic the Texans offense could be if they could find someone to consistently take pressure off of Andre Johnson. If they draft Jones, though they must be careful not to get too pass happy as teams like the Falcons and Jets have at times. They have a formidable rushing attack and should continue to lean on that
22. New York Jets* (5-4)-Janoris Jenkins, CB, Northern Alabama
Kyle Wilson has played much better than anyone expected, but the Jets showed significant interest in Nnadmi Asmougha before settling on Cromartie. The Jets will likely draft a Rush linebacker here because that is one position that is keeping this defense from being truly dominant, but in my mock which is seeking to explore different possibilities I’m going to mock them Jenkins because he is is (and it’s not that close) clearly the most physically talented player left here. The way the Jets defense plays they can never have too many cornerbacks. I think ideally they want a pass rusher (Brandon Jenkins, Vinny Curry, etc here) or a safety here because their safeties are just average.
23. Dallas Cowboys (5-4)-Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech
Well this is not an exciting or unique pick really, but I’ve been avoiding giving them cornerbacks in my mocks because I’ve most often given them a quality center or another pass rusher. This time though they get an athletic ball hawk who can take advantage of DeMarcus Ware forcing some early throws to pick off some passes. The way he plays reminds a lot of people of Asante Samuel.
24. Chicago* Bears (6-3)-Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers
Roy Williams has been hit or miss this year and the best Bears wide receiver has probably been Earl Bennett. That’s not good enough. I think cornerback is an under publicized need, but in this mock draft they grab the versatile Mohamed Sanu who Dan Kadar has compared to Hakeem Nicks coming out of college because they have similar skill sets. Nicks has developed into one of the best wide receivers in the league, and maybe the Bears will get lucky with that. How is it that the Bears draft offensive linemen early routinely, but still have problems along the offensive line? It’s mind-boggling.
25. Cincinnati Bengals – from Oakland* (4-4)-Montee Ball, RB, Wisconsin
I’m not ready to put Montee Ball ahead of Lamar Miller yet, but Miller is just a redshirt sophomore so he could easily return to school for another year. The Bengals have a good young tight end, good young wide receivers, a solid young quarterback, a plus defense, but are struggling at times on the ground. Enter Montee Ball. Ball is a touchdown machine in college and the best Wisconsin running back prospect in a long time. Ball looks much better in 2011 than he did in 2010 and should be drafted before the end of the second round with a chance of being selected in the first.
26. New York Giants* (6-3)-Vinny Curry, LB, Marshall
The Giants love to try and take 34 OLB and force them into their 34 system. Why? I still haven’t figured this out, but Curry is an exceptional pass rusher and could intrigue the Giants here. Though it’s more likely they draft an offensive linemen (Barrett Jones, perhaps)
27. Baltimore Ravens* (6-3)-Brandon Jenkins, OLB, Florida State
People are down on Jenkins because he isn’t producing as much, but he’s still playing very well. He’s drawn a lot more attention this year and has also been asked to rush a lot less. Now he plays a hybrid role and must drop back in coverage and has more run stopping responsibilities to take care of as well. The result is a decline in production, but he is still a first round talent. The Ravens defense would be absolutely frightening if Suggs didn’t have to make all the plays on the quarterback like he has to now.
28. New England – from New Orleans* (7-3)-Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama
I can’t help but feel the Patriots will Finally give up and draft a talented young pass rusher. Upshaw is the perfect fit because he can play a hybrid role a little bit of a 43 DE and a little bit of a 34 OLB. For people who haven’t watched the Patriots much this year they are deploying much more 43 schemes this year so having someone who is versatile enough to contribute in the 43 or 34 is a priority for the Patriots.
29. San Francisco 49ers* (8-1)-Chase Minnifield, CB, Viringia
Carlos Rodgers has had a lot of interceptions this year, but is still being exposed in coverage. The 49ers could use some young cornerback talent. I think everyone and their brother knows that the 49ers are still looking for their franchise quarterback (whether or not Kapernick is him remains to be seen). Alex Smith is having a career year, but he’s not a franchise quarterback. Other than that the 49ers don’t have a tremendous amount of needs. More receiving weapons, but we’ll have to wait and see how well Edwards does with the team since he hasn’t played much this year because of injury.
30. New England Patriots(6-3)-Devin Still, DL, Penn State
Still is having an absolutely monster season and is playing like a first round pick. The Patriots defense lacks playmakers a tall three levels so drafting a defensive talent is a must. It would also be fair to say that the Patriots will take a long hard look at the top wide receiver talents, looking for someone who can stretch the field. I think Marvin McNutt can do that, but it’s too early for him here.
31. Pittsburgh Steelers* (7-3)-Whitney Mercilius, OLB, Illinois
Jason Worilds is playing better than people think he is, at least according to Craig Gottschalk of Nice Pick Cowher, but James Harrison is aging and there is not great depth behind him. The Steelers run such a complicated defense that their picks usually take a year or two to get acclimated anyway so drafting a player the Steelers want to contribute two years from now is just par for the course for them. I don’t see it mocked much, but a safety makes a lot of sense.
32. Green Bay Packers- (9-0)-T.J. McDonald, S, USC
I’m not sure what is going on with Nick Collins so safety could be a need. I like McDonald’s game and think he is worth a first round pick so this is like a best player available situation here.
