2012 NFL Mock Draft New York Jets 7 Round Mock Draft

facebooktwitterreddit

Because I’m crazy I’m going to start doing full 7 round mock drafts already. I’ll do one for each team between now and declaration day. So far I’ve done the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills and today I’ll get to the New York Jets.

I’m going to assume the Jets are picking around 20th.

For the first three rounds I’m going to use Dan Kadar of Mocking the Draft’s big board

Round 1 Michael Floyd, WR, Norte Dame

I know the consensus here is OLB pass rusher, but I think the pass rushing class is a bit weak, which means it’s possible someone gets drafted and Aaron Maybin is showing something as a pass rusher. Michael Floyd is supremely talented, but has the dreaded character concerns lable. YOu know who thinks they have the coach to handle character concerns? the New York Jets. This isn’t quite Dez Bryant falling to the Cowboys in the late twenties kind of steal, but it is a steal. Floyd’s size and ability to go up and get the ball will be a nice complement to Santonio Holmes.

Round 2-Bruce Irvin, OLB, West Viringia

For some unknown reason the Mountaineers decided to move Irvin to a more traditional defensive end position after he had 14 sacks last year. He’s responded to that challenge by racking up an “amazing” 4 sacks this year! Sometimes coaches over think things. Anyway, Irvin’s stock is down,  down and he will have to show off some explosiveness in the pre-draft process if he wants to get up to the first round again. In the late second round though he could be scooped up by a team looking to add pass rushers, as this case here with the New York Jets.

Round 3-Eddite Whitley, S, Virginia Tech

Whitley is a pretty good value pick in the round three, but he also fills a big need for the New York Jets. It’s amazing their pass defense has been good this year with really average (at best) safety play week after week. Whitley has pretty good size and good speed. Whitley does a nice job supporting the run game and is versatile. He has good speed. A knock on him is that he doesn’t make a ton of plays, but he’s an instant upgrade a safety for the Jets.

Round 4-Trevor Guyton, DL, California Golden Bears

Guyton is a guy who won’t test with elite measurables, but he’s a consistent force along the defensive line who already has plenty of experience in the 34. For the Golden Bears he lines up all over the line at LDE, RDE, and Nose Tackle. He has a relentless motor and can hold up at the point of attack. He’s not discussed much, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he went higher than this.

Round 5-Bradly Sowell, OT, Ole Miss

I tend not to address offensive linemen as early as I should because teams will often reach for offensive linemen, and the Jets aren’t a team that reach often. They do need more talent at the offensive line, Vladimir Ducasse doesn’t look like he belongs in the N.F.L. yet. He was considered a project when he was drafted so there is still some time for him to prove his worthy, but the Jets are going to need insurance.

Round 6-Josh Norman, CB, Coastal Carolina

A small school cornerback prospect. Rex Ryan uses a lot of cornerbacks in his defensive system, so he will always look to stock pile cornerback picks. This is just another example of that.

Round 7T.J. Barnes, Nose Tackle, Georgia Tech

A mammoth in the middle. barnes is listed at 6-7 and 333 pounds. He’s one of the few draft elegible nose tackles and the Jets take a chance on him here.
