Brandon Jenkins Scouting Report DL/OLB Florida State Seminoles

facebooktwitterreddit

Brandon Jenkins had an excellent 2010 season, but was considered undersized in 2010 added 15 pounds of muscle, but now is having a less productive 2011 season (statistically). But don’t tell that to Jimbo Fisher, “”If he’ll quit listening to ya’ll he’ll be fine,” Fisher said. “If he’ll quit listening to the media and Mel Kiper and all those guys. … Because the NFL doesn’t care about numbers. They care about how you play.”Just because you don’t have a sack doesn’t mean you’re not doing things right.”

Jenkins had a good performance vs Virginia with 2.5 sacks to bring his season total up to 7 (11/20/2011)

Brandon Jenkins, OLB, FSU

Pros–Quick off the ball… great natural pass rush ability.. long arms…solid size… versatile (can play in 3-4 or 4-3 so not necessarily an OLB), could be a great fit as a rush linebacker… finishes plays…good motor…gets his hands up when he doesn’t get home with the pass rush…Played a lot more of the hybrid position in 2011 which should ease his transition to rush linebacker in 2011, especially in coverage…taking on a lot of double teams in 2011 (ask Bjoern Werner how much it’s helping)…hard worker (added a lot of muscle between 2010 and 2011)

Cons–having a down season in 2011 after an extraordinary productive 2010…will struggle to hold up against the run…not an elite athlete (like Jason Pierre Paul etc)…still a work in progress in coverage…could be more physical…a tick slower than last year…more quick laterally than he is fast…

Thoughts

Brandon Jenkins had a huge 2010 season and is continuing to play at a first round level in 2011 even if the numbers aren’t there. Even though his sack production is down, he’ll probably be a better pro because of his 2011 season which saw him add 15-20 pounds of muscle in the off-season and also because the Seminoles are using him in a more hybrid role this season asking him to drop back into coverage and also to rush standing up…things he was likely to have to learn at the N.F.L. level anyway. Jenkins and Upshaw highlight a rather weak 34 OLB class and he could perhaps be drafted slightly higher than a team would ideally like to take him. The more I do this armature scouting the more I realize that one key factor that separates the good pass rushers from the average pass rushers is motor. And that Jenkins has. His non-stop motor will lead him to success at the N.F.L level. He’d be a very nice player to play opposite Terrell Suggs in Baltimore or perhaps to be a factor from the linebacker position for the Bills that they are sorely lacking.
