What is up with Philip Rivers this year? This is the second year in a row where a very quality 2004 draft quarterback is having an awful season. Entering the game Philip Rivers had 7 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, but he was going to be going up against the Chiefs, which usually means he was about to light it up. What happened? Rivers threw two interceptions and had one of the most embarrassing fumbled snaps in recent N.F.L. memory, perhaps only approached in terms of embarrassment by Tony Romo’s botched field goal snaps.
Philip Rivers also chipped in two fumbles tonight (the botched snap in field goal range as the Chargers were looking to ice the game), and another fumble. With those two fumbles, Rivers is up to 6 fumbles this year, 1 less than all of last season.
What is odd is that this year Rivers has a running game with Ryan Matthews having a very fine season in his second year. Rivers also had a healthy Antonio Gates as well as a healthy Vincent Jackson for all season.
For the Chiefs, what a difference a month can make. Last month everyone was ranking the Chiefs as the worst team in the league as they were getting blown out every single game, but all of a sudden they are on a 4 game win streak and tied with the Raiders and Chargers for the A.F.C. West division lead. Matt Cassell has pretty much ended anytalk of drafting a quarterback in the first round.
The Chiefs have two winnable games in the next two week as they will play the Dolphins and follow that up with a home game vs Denver.
It looks like Todd Haley’s wife might have to wait at least three more weeks for him to shave.
As for Norv Turner. He is awful. That is all.
One last thought, first round pick Jon Baldwin really displayed his potential tonight making some huge caches (he also had some bad drops). he had 5 receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown tonight.
