Will it Last?

How many times do we see a team or a player exceed expectations in a football game and we think, there is no way that can last?  That player is either too young or not that good.  That team had an easy week or the ball just bounced their way.  Most times it does not last, but every so often those early signs are premonitions of what is to come.  In this weekly column we will look at 3 players and 3 teams who jumped out and ask the question: Will it last?

Players

  1. Chris Wells:   While Arizona is on the verge of being in last place in the NFC West, fans can’t fault Chris Wells.  Wells has 79 carries for 381 yards, and 6 touchdowns.  He is averaging 4.8 yards per carry.  He is on pace for around 250 carries, 1200 yards, and 18 touchdowns.  Not too bad considering the team he is on.  I expect similar number all season long as long as he stays healthy.  I am glad he is doing well since I thought he was an elite RB our of college.  Will last all season long depending on his health.
  1.  Jordy Nelson:            During the Super Bowl run Jordy Nelson was posting huge numbers in the post season.  Many wondered if this would continue in the regular season.  It has…and I am glad to have him in my Fantasy league…anyways, he has 30 receptions, 413 yards, and 4 touchdowns in 6 games.  He is on pace for around 80 receptions, 1100 yards, and 10-11 touchdowns…not too bad for a white guy.  He runs great routes, plays on a fantastic offense, and is coming into his prime.  I expect a slight increase in receptions and a slight decrease in yards.  Will Last.
  1. Phillip Rivers:            Many people considered him a top 3 fantasy QB.  It has not happened this year…whether it be injuries to Gates and Floyd or the OL not playing well, he has more interceptions than touchdowns.  On this pace he would post around 4800 yards and only 20 touchdowns with more than 20 interceptions!!!!!  I cannot see this happening.  I fully expect a slight increase in touchdowns and a major decrease in interceptions.  I guess a lot depends on how long Gates is out…never take away a QB’s third down/red zone target.  Will not last.

Team

1.      San Francisco 49ers:       I witnessed first hand the talent the 49ers have.  Look, they are 5-1 and still have a ton of division games left….why would it not last?  They have a dominate defense, dominate ST’s, and a very strong run game.  If Alex Smith can stay mistake free than I believe the 49ers will win around 11 games.             Will last.

 2.      New York Jets:    Well Rex, I think you will be watching the Super Bowl at home for a third straight year.  The OL looks to be in shambles, the passing game is mediocre, and their run game is non-existent.  They are 3-3 and there is a lot of season left but 2 of their wins are against the Dolphins and Jaguars so I just am not feeling it.  Plus their run defense is giving up well over 100 yards a game…that is not Jets football.             Jets Will remain in mediocrity

Cincinnati Bengals:    4-2 and a Wild Card in their sights….how are they doing it with a rookie QB and young wideouts?  Their defense is one of the best and the Bengals have a steady run game.  Plus Andy Dalton is a winner…he might not look flashy but he gets wins.  Now I don’t think they will reach the post season but an 8 or 9 win season is possible This team has a promising future.   Winning at this pace will not last, but they will still enjoy a solid season
