Jesse’s Picks

Not a great week last week, but I felt bad about it heading into the week. Feel much better about this week (actually I don’t, probably feel worse).

I’ll take the Packers -14.5 to beat the Rams and cover the spread. That’s an awful lot of points to give, but the Rams have been bad all season. Steven Jackson will probably play on Sunday so that’s good news for the Rams and he might be able to run enough to cover the spread, but I”m not going to bet against the Packers until I lose betting against the Packers.

I’ll also take Pittsburgh to cover the spread vs Jacksonville at home. Another big line, but the Steelers are bullies and can beat up a team like this. Mike Tomlin hasn’t been happy with the team’s play at all this season and Gabbert will be more confused than he’s ever been facing the Steelers blitzing defense.

The Eagles are favorites at Washington? I’ll take Washington getting the points. Do you know what happens when you embarrass a team on Monday night with the “greatest performance ever by a quarterback”? You give a team a lot of motivation. The Redskins are also being disrespected giving points at home vs a division rival. I think the Redskins will be able to run well on the Eagles and their defense is pretty good. I also like this line because both Trent Cole and Jason Peters, the Eagles two best offensive linemen are out.

I’ll take the 49ers and the points at Detroit. Detroit just had an emotional win on Monday night (their first in a long time) vs their division rival. The 49ers have a nasty defense and are actually a good team. Soon, people are going to catch on and the 49es won’t get the comfy point spreads. Alex Smith still isn’t a franchise quarterback, but he’s at least impersonating one. I don’t think the Lions can run on the 49ers, which will keep them one dimensional. I don’t love the 49ers offensive line vs the Lions, but I think they can keep it within three.

I’ll take the points with Carolina, even though the Falcons will probably win. Again, the 2011 Carolina Panthers are the 2010 Detroit Lions. They are not the best team, and they are not good enough to win, but they are good enough to scare everyone. The Panthers need a few more pieces, but this is a very quality young team who can score on anyone. The Falcon s defense isn’t good at all, and the Falcons have an identity crisis on offense. They want to throw too much.

I’ll take the points and the Colts. I wanted to take the Bengals in this game, but 7 points is too much. The Bengals have the leagues most underrated defense and also have a good offense as well (they are a good team), but the Colts are still a proud team and I think they have enough on defense to keep this game close.

I’ll take the Giants to cover the spread with big hesitation. Don’t bet this game, or the Giants. Ever. They are Jekyll and Hyde. I think this is going to be a high scoring game so more than the spread, I feel comfortable with the over. Neither team has the secondary depth to stop the other teams passing game. I’m bias and I have to pick Giants out of principle.

I’ll take Houston with the points (-8)

What Ravens offense has Vegas been watching that makes them think the Ravens are 8 points better than the Texans. The Texans will be without Andre Johnson and Mario Williams two of their best players, but this is no slouch team otherwise. They still have weapons and their defense isn’t terrible. The Ravens offense hasn’t lit anyone up this year (anyone good) and I don’t expect them to do it to the Texans on Sunday.

I’ll take Oakland to cover the points vs the Browns. The Raiders defense is missing some pieces and I can see a good argument to take the Browns here especially considering how inconsistent the Raiders have been in recent history. Yuck Don’t like this pick either.

I’ll take New England to cover the spread vs the Cowboys. I think both teams will score a lot of points, but New England is unbeatable at home and I don’t see how Dallas will stop New Engladnd at all. The Patriots dont’ have to run a balanced offense to score. The Cowboys do a good job stopping the run, but not the pass.

Minnesota to win outright at Chicago. This is my upset pick of the week. I think the Vikings and Bears are both pretty bad, but the Bears Dcan’t stop anyone and the Vikings have enough talent to win this game. THe Bears offensive line is bad and Jared Allen might finally have a big game this weekend.

I’ll take the Jets to blow out Miami on Monday night. I’m pretty sure I was the first person on the web to put the Dolphins at #32 in my power rankings (I did it in the preseason…ask the Dolphins. fans at phinphantic they were not happy and let me have it). And now everyone is catching on. You can’t try to get rid of your coach, fail to do that, and then expect nothing bad to happen. Football is all about momentum and emotion (and health). Right now the Dolphins don’t have any of those three. With Chad Henne out I can’t imagine the Jets not blowing out the Dolphins. The Jets are bully team they’ll beat up on bad teams, but lose to the ones that can punch them in the mouth early.

Lock of the week-4-1 in the lock (thanks for not showing up last week Tennessee..Jerks)

Colts to cover the spread vs the Bengals.

I think the Bengals are underrated, but 7 point seems a lot for a team that’s not great. The Colts are a proud team I think they’ll see an opportunity to win here and really put on a good show. If not this season is over, wrap it up and get ready to pick first or second Colts fans. If they can’t come out inspired on Sunday there are going to be lots of problems in Indy.
