NFLmocks preseason bio

Really emerged in 2010 as a first year starter for the Cowboys and ignited the offense to the tune of 4,277 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Helped lead the Cowboys to third in the nation in scoring and total offense, and was an All Big 12 selection. We know that Weeden can dominate bad defensive teams, but now we need to see him step up his accuracy and decision making against teams like Oklahoma and Texas A&M. Weeden is a guy whose story will be receiving a lot of attention in the coming months. He was a 2nd round pick of the New York Yankees in 2002, and was born in 1983, so he is going to be an older NFL rookie. Because of that, his stock will probably take a hit, and he might be a second round pick similar to John Beck a few years back. Still, there is no question about this guy’s ability, and if he can repeat on his 2010 performance, he should be a real hot name in NFL Draft circles. He joined the Oklahoma State program in 2007, and returns in 2011 as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation.

PROS: Weeden has the physical tools that you look for in a quarterback…Weeden is productive and his accuracy is improving….Mature…makes quick decisions…high completion percentage…Good height

CONS: Weeden plays in a shotgun spread offense…Weeden does not have the experience to translate his skill set to a pro style offense… Weeden’s age is also a concern…Weeden has played with some major offensive weapons…hurries throws when pressure is around

Summary: .  Weeden has a N.F.L. caliber offensive arm, but it’s tough to get a great read on his ability to go through progressions and his ability to make plays happen when things break down. Weeden has played with some of the best Wide receivers in the country, specifically this year with Justin Blackmon. Weeden can make all the throws and has good mobility, how much will his age negatively effect his draft stock?  If he was playing like this at the age of 22 it wouldmake a difference, but teams could be hesitant to spend a high pick on an older player (though Chris Weinke didn’t go undrafted and Danny Watkins went in the first round last year). John Beck also went in the second round.

Player Comparison: John Beck with Brett Favre’s gunslinger arm.
