Seahawks and Chiefs, Don’t Understand “Suck for Luck” as Dolphins and Colts Pull Ahead

facebooktwitterreddit

If you’re a Seattle Seahawks fan or Kansas City Chiefs fan something awful happened this weekend: your team won it’s second game of the season already. Apparently the ‘Hawks and Chiefs missed the memo because they have been showing a lot of signs of life the past two, especially the Chiefs where Matt Cassel and Dwayne Bowe did their best Tom Brady-Wes Welker impersonation as Matt Cassel threw for four touchdowns and zero interceptions and Bowe was running free through the Colts secondary like a gazelle in a meadow.

Not to be out-done the Seattle Seahawks traveled across country to Metlife Stadium in New Jersey to play a 1 o’clock game. They had all the built in excuses in the world to lose, but they came out strong and beat around the Giants. And then the Seahawks lost starting quarterback Tavaris Jackson and were down by three late in the fourth quarter, which meant that Seahawks fans were forefitting the game and picking up points in the Luck standings, but No! Charlie Whitehurst drove the team right down the field for a go-ahead touchdown.

The Giants responded with a big drive that brought them down to the Seahawks five yard line with a minute thirty to go and all three timeouts. This game was over. But a Giants false start and a tipped ball off Cruz’s hand that went the distance the other way sealed the fate for the Giants and Seahawks…who were both loses on Sunday. The Giants lost a great chance to go to 4-1 in the division to be all alone at the top of the division (they would lead the Redskins by a half a game) the Seahawks picked up another win to go 2 games behind the Colts and Dolphins in the “suck for Luck”. The Seahawks are proving to be better than advertised, but in the long run is that good for this franchise? Only time will tell. But with the Seahawks paying in the relatively weak N.F.C. West and with more games vs the sloppy and overrated N.F.C. East the Hawks might pull out even a few more victories.

The Dolphins stood idle and the Colts lost a game to the Chiefs to move to 0-5 as they saw their defense regress. The Colts had put up two solid defensive outings in a row before giving up big yards and points to the bad Chiefs offense. The Dolphins will be coming off a bye week which is usually a great chance to get a victory, but they are coming off the bye to play the Jets, who will be looking for revenge after two poor performances.

The Colts might be one of the few teams who wouldn’t take Luck if they ended up picking first (the Eagles, the Rams, Panthers are the others, who are 1-3) because of Peyton Manning, but they also probably would just trade down a few spots to one of these other teams and maybe grab a Matt Kalil. I still think they are better than the worst team in the league as Painter looks better each week, but time will tell.

Other teams in the Suck for Luck race

Minnesota Vikings-Not as talented as people thought outside of Mcnabb heading into the season (maybe Brett Favre was playing better than we thought his final two seasons) but too talented to end up with Luck. If they end up picking first they are in a weird position because they just used a first round pick on Christian ponder this year.

St. Louis Rams-they headed into the season being more talented than their counterparts in the division, but have been hampered seriously by injuries. They don’t look like a very good team now and don’t have an easy schedule either. This is a team that could easily end up 4-12 or worse. Sam Bradford still looks like a franchise quarterback so they’ll probably hold the Luck pick for ransom if they select first.

Arizona, Denver, Jacksonville, Panthers, Eagles

These are all 1-4 teams

Jacksonville is my long shot favorite to end up with the number one overall pick. MJD can win a few games by himself though which hurts their chances, but a rookie quarterback on a team that is playing for nothing and a coach who is probably going to be fired adds up to a terrible season. I really hope a team like Jacksonville, Rams, Panthers, or Arizona ends up with the first pick because it would add a ton of intrigue and I could avoid titling every mock draft with something like “Chiefs in Luck! 2012 NFL Mock draft”. Because those can only be fun for so long.

Denver is about to go into Tebow time and that could lead to a reenergized season or if Merril Hodge is right, an utter disappointment. Either way by season’s end the Broncos will knowfor sure  whether or not they have a franchise quarterback.

The Eagles will not be worse than 6-10 when the season ends. they will not have the first pick.

The Cardinals should be able to squeak out a few victories because they can score points in a hurry when things are clicking. I don’t think they will end up with Luck and on top of that their problems are mostly up front on offense and in the back seven on defense. Kolb hasn’t been great, but they can win that division with Kolb.

Favorites to win Luck derby:

Dolphins. Think the Dolphins are playing bad now? They don’t have an “easy” schedule and they are going to really quit on Sparano soon. Oh and by the way they are playing without their starting quarterback for the rest of the season.
