NFL Picks vs Spread Week 5

I’d like to say that so far I’m 4-0 in my locks of the week and I’ll continue to brag about that, until it comes to an end (probably soon), but I also recognize that I’m one fumble call away from being 3-1 (had the Giants last week as my locks of the week…keep your head, Victor).

We do this through email so the lines are from earlier in the week and come from footballocks.com

Jesse’s picks.

I don’t feel great about this week, but what do I know? Last week, I said I don’t like any of these games here goes nothing and I went 10-4. So here goes nothing!

Give me the Colts to cover the spread. The Chiefs don’t have the offensive weapons to take advantage of the Colts weakness in the run game. Also this is a prideful group and I have to believe they  are winning a game sometime soon.

I’m going to pick Arizona to win outright vs the Vikings. This pick is contingent on the Cardinals coming out and playing with the same intensity they did last week vs the Giants (though that was at home). I’m nervous about the 1 oclock start time for West coast teams, but the reason I’m taking the Cardinals is because the Cardinals match up well with the Vikings. The Cardinals are pretty stout along the defensive line and should contain the run. The Vikings don’t have a dynamic passing offense. Also the Vikings don’t stop the pass that well. Cardinals for the upset.

I’ll take the Eagles to cover the spread. I like the Bills, but they are not better or equal to the Eagles. The Bills are the toast of the town because they beat the Patriots after putting up huge numbers vs two A.F.C. West teams. The Eagles know if they want to compete for the playoffs they better start winning soon. I’m also saying obviously start Fred Jackson in your fantasy league.

I’ll take Oakland with the points vs the Texans. The travel’s not that far (at least it doesn’t look far on my globe!), but more importantly football is an emotional game. The Raiders just lost Al Davis I can’t imagine them coming out flat tommorrow. The Raiders aren’t a bad team either. Their defense though stout up front has struggled to stop the run.

I’ll take Carolina with the points. The Panthers are this year’s 2010 Detroit Lions. They are not good enough to win a lot of games, but they are good enough to scare a lot of teams. A division rivalry game that’s in Carolina and they are 6 point underdogs. I don’t think they will win, but I do think they will stay within six points. That’s just a few Steve Smith to Cam Newton big plays.

I’ll pick the Bengals to win outright. The Bengals have the N.F.L’s most underrated defense. Their is a lot of young talent on the defense. They also have some promising players on offense, just not enough on offense. Jacksonville on the other hand is also starting a rookie quarterback except they are not very good and they have even less offensive weapons (specifically in the passing game) than the Bengals do. I’m not sure the Bengals will travel well (bad teams don’t usually), but I think they can win this game.

I’ll take Tennessee with the points. I recognize that Matt Hasselbeck’s wonder season won’t last forever, but I also know that the Titans have the number one scoring defense and the Steelers offense looks terrible and that was before Big Ben had his current injury. The Titans aren’t better than the Steelers, but in Pittsburgh the games can be low scoring sometimes. I’m not sure the Steelers can score enough points to cover 8 points. This might be my lock of the week, so that’s a scary thing to do, to go against the Steelers for a lock of the week.

I’ll hesitantly take the Giants to cover the Seahawks spread. The Giants will be missing Justin Tuck, David Baas and Brandon Jacobs tomorrow. Last year they went up to Seattle and beat down the Seahawks, but that team was much different than this one (Pete Carrol loves his roster turnover). The Giants generally do better when they are the underdogs. Eli Manning is playing lights out and the Seahawks have the dreaded 1 oclock start time after traveling from the West Coast. Clearly the Giants should be your survivor pool pick because they must win this game if they want to seriously contend for the playoffs with their brutal second half schedule, but laying the points is a bit daunting.

San Francisco to cover the spread . Kind of surprised they are favored, but I like them because their run defense is stout and the Buccaneers haven’t found any rhythm in their passing game. The Buccaneers deense is young and talented, but I wouldn’t classify them as a “good defense” yet.

Yuck. I’ll take the Jets with the points. The Jets are getting points because they looked absolutely embarrassing last week, but my general rule of thumb is if two teams should be competitive and it’s a divisional game with a high point spread take the points. Now if the Patriots run the score up on the Jets and that shuts Rex Ryan up, I’ll have some mixed feelings about that.

Green Bay to cover another sizeable spread. Taking the Packers to cover the spread has worked out in my favor a lot, so I’ll ride that train one more time.

Give me Chicago with the points. The Bears aren’t terrible and the Lions are pretty good, but have been inconsistent. let’s see how they handle success. 6 points seem high to me.

Lock of the week:

Titans @ Pittsburgh

Unfortunately, if you’re using this page to bet (and you shouldn’t be it’s illegal in most states! wink* wink*) the line has gone down to Titans +3, which is not my lock of the week, but from the opening lines this was my lock of the week.
