Chiefs Beat the Minnesota Vikings, But Lose Ground in “Suck for Luck”

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs did the worst thing they could to today, when they beat the Minnesota Vikings 22-17 today in Kansas City. The loss vaults the Vikings to first place in “Suck for Luck”, depending on what the Colts do on Monday night vs the Buccaneers. The Vikings are also currently tied with the Miami Dolphins as the front runners in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.  The Vikings will continue to battle the Seahawks, Chiefs, Colts, and Dolphins for the privlege to draft Andrew Luck. While it’s a tough pill to swallow for fans, their best shot at a great future might be to be so unbearably bad the rest of the season that they are guranteed the first overall pick. I, for one, am rooting for the Colts, or Vikings to win the sweepstakes for Luck. I want to see what happens. Will the Colts spend a number one overall pick on Luckif Peyton Manning might be able to play for the next three seasons? That’s a tough call. Likewise the Vikings just sent their 12th overall pick on a player they think will be a Franchise Quarterback. Would they dare draft another franchise Quarterback the very next year. I’ts a very exciting proposition and really adds intrigue into what might happen for Luck.

Despite the victory today, it remains crystal clear that the Chiefs and Matt Cassel marriage is not for long. It also is becoming more and more clear that Todd Haley should be not be a head coach in the National Football league. Haley jettisoned Chan Gailey and hs the offensve mind of one of the best offenses in football. I’m not sure why Charlie Weiss left Haley, but the fact remains they would be much better on offense if he was still in Kansas City.

Elsewhere around the league:

The New York Giants squeaked out a victory vs the Arizona Cardinals today in a game that kept my lock of the week picks at 4-0. The New York Giants didn’t play well at all in the first half and look lackadasical. They were clearly the better team than the Cardinals. The Cardinals twice forced fumbles (and recovered them) inside the Giants own 20 which led to points.

The game got very, very interesting when the Giants were driving for the final score and Eli Manning made a nice play to young WR Victor Cruz. Cruz then made a couple of moves, realized he had nowhere to go and laid down on the ground, got up slowly and just put the ball on the ground. The problem was no one ever touched him!! In a controversial call the Referees ruled that Cruz had given himself up (which he clearly did) and therefore the play was over and not reviewable. People are arguing that Cruz stumbled and fell and did not give himself up, but I think that’s inaccurate. No, the problem is he should have just laid there until the whistle blew or someone touched him. Or Gone down feet first, or took a knee. He took an awkard way to go down and it almost cost the Giants a big win.

Hakeem Nicks looked fully recovered from his bruised knee he suffered in week 1. He had 10 catches for a 162 yards and a game winning touchdown.

Lastly, the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles both gave up big second half-lead to inferior teams. The Cowboys did it in “Tony Romo” fashion. Romo threw three really ill advised picks (two that were pick sixes) that cost the Cowboys the game. The Lions moved to 4-0. The Eagles on the other hand had a huge lead at halftime and just couldn’t keep their offense humming and the 49ers whittled away the Eagles big lead. The “Dream Team” moves to 1-3 and has a big game upcoming next week vs the Buffalo Bills. A game they should win.

In Cincinnati, the Bengals had a big comeback pulling a Bills like victory out of their hat. Andy Dalton really looked good in the second half after a shaky first half. It was an impressive victory for the Bengals who have a lot of young pieces  and are going to be a team back on the rise. The Bengals domianted the Bills offensive and defensive lines, which is why they were able to come away with that victory.

The last point I want to bemaon is me, the idiot, starting Big Ben over Matt Hasselbeck again. The Steelers look awful so far this year. Matt Hasselbeck went on to have a huge day with 3 touchdown passes and Big Ben did nothing. I was up against Aaron Rodgers so I’m pretty sure I got blown out of that game. Come on, Big Ben. Step it up!
