2012 NFL First Round Mock Draft The Chiefs Are Winning “Suck for Luck”
For this 2012 mock draft, I will use my colleague Jesse Bartolis’ latest power rankings as the order. This is my first 2012 NFL mock drafts in awhile so a lot has changed.
1. Kansas City Chiefs: Andrew Luck, Quarterback, Stanford
Andrew Luck is the unquestioned pick here, right? Goodbye, Matt Cassel.
2. Miami Dolphins: Matt Barkley, Quarterback, USC
Dolphins get a fiery quarterback of the future in Matt Barkley.
3. Indianapolis Colts: Landry Jones, Quarterback, Oklahoma
Colts groom Jones to be the eventual replacement to Peyton Manning.
4. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil, Offensive Tackle, USC
Kalil will protect the blind side of Minnesota’s quarterback of the future, Christian Ponder.
5. Seattle Seahawks: Robert Griffin III, Quarterback, Baylor
Surprise, surprise. Griffin is going to burst onto the scene and some team is going to pick him way higher than expected.
6. Cincinnati Bengals: Dre’ Kirkpatrick, Cornerback, Alabama
Kirkpatrick takes the spot left by Jonathan Joseph. One of the biggest and most athletic CB prospects I’ve seen.
7. Denver Broncos: Morris Claiborne, Cornerback, LSU
Broncos get the tough, speedy, versatile Claiborne to groom as a key piece of their defensive rebuild.
8. St. Louis Rams: Zach Brown, Linebacker, North Carolina
Brown looks bigger and better this year, and he has elite speed. Could be a huge get for the Rams’ defense.
9. Jacksonville Jaguars: Justin Blackmon, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State
Blackmon is a big-time playmaker who knows Gabbert from his days in the Big 12. He will help the development of the young QB.
10. Tennessee Titans: Quinton Coples, Defensive End, North Carolina
Versatile enough to play DE or DT for the Titans, a great athlete underachieving this season.
11. Arizona Cardinals: Alshon Jeffery, Wide Receiver, South Carolina
The possibilities of Jeffery along with Larry Fitzgerald are scary to say the least.
12. Carolina Panthers: Michael Floyd, Wide Receiver, Notre Dame
Panthers get a sure-handed receiver to be Cam Newton’s number one for years to come.
13. Chicago Bears: Jonathan Martin, Offensive Tackle, Stanford
Bears continue to make good on their investment in Jay Cutler by protecting him with top draft picks.
14. Cleveland Browns: Brandon Jenkins, Defensive End, Florida State
Top notch pass rusher who can provide pressure off the edge and become an elite player in the NFL.
15. Cleveland Browns (from Atlanta): Alfonzo Dennard, Cornerback, Nebraska
Dennard will take over for Sheldon Brown and provide the Browns with a fantastic young CB duo.
16. Philadelphia Eagles: Jared Crick, Defensive Tackle, Nebraska
Eagles take the best player available here, a pass rushing DT with a blue-collar work ethic.
17. Washington Redskins: Riley Reiff, Offensive Tackle, Iowa
Reiff is a perfect fit for the zone blocking scheme and can take over for Jammal Brown at RT.
18. New York Giants: Trent Richardson, Running Back, Alabama
Best player available here, a tactic often used by the Giants. Richardson will make Pro Bowls in New York.
19. Oakland Raiders: Bruce Irvin, Joker, West Virginia
Athletic freak with tons of upside as a pass rusher. He will entice the Raiders.
20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: LaMichael James, Running Back, Oregon
Speed back to pair with former Duck LeGarrette Blount who adds a dimension to the Bucs offense.
21. Buffalo Bills: David DeCastro, Guard, Stanford
Smart player who will start at guard and protect Ryan Fitzpatrick.
22. New York Jets: Cordy Glenn, Guard, Georgia
Powerful guard prospect who will fit into the Jets’ ground and pound offense.
23. Houston Texans: Brandon Thompson, Defensive Tackle, Clemson
Potential nose tackle prospect who adds more youth and talent to an already awesome front seven.
24. San Francisco 49ers: Stephon Gilmore, Cornerback, South Carolina
Underrated prospect who hits like a ton of bricks. Good fit for the Niners.
25. Dallas Cowboys: Jerel Worthy, Defensive Lineman, Michigan State
Versatile lineman who should shoot up draft boards this year.
26. New England Patriots (from New Orleans): Kelechi Osemele, Guard, Iowa State
Powerful guard prospect who could possibly play tackle in the Pats’ scheme if needed.
27. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alameda Ta’Amu, Defensive Tackle, Washington
Massive nose tackle prospect who would make the transition from Casey Hampton very easy.
28. Detroit Lions: Luke Kuechly, Linebacker, Boston College
Steal at this point. Cerebral, leader, and a tackling machine.
29. Baltimore Ravens: Courtney Upshaw, Linebacker, Alabama
Compares to Ray Lewis in some ways, so who better to introduce him to the NFL?
30. San Diego Chargers: Manti Te’o, Linebacker, Notre Dame
Te’o is another steal this late in the first round. A tackling machine and a perfect fit for the 3-4 defense.
31: New England Patriots: Jeff Fuller, Wide Receiver, Texas A&M
Fringe first round receiver prospect who is falling down the draft board slightly, but could have a strong finish. Great size.
32. Green Bay Packers: T.J. McDonald, Safety, USC
Pairs with Morgan Burnett to give the Packers a dangerous safety tandem.
