Virginia Tech Running Back David Wilson Sets Lofty Goals for 2011 in ESPN the Magazine Interview

If you don’t subscribe to ESPN and get access to ESPN Insider, I feel pity for you. It is a great tool, especially if you are a fan of the NFL Draft. You can get access to ESPN Insider via a subscription to ESPN the Magazine, which I usually briefly scan before discarding it until the next one arrives.

In this particular ESPN Magazine, there is a feature on Virginia Tech running back David Wilson, one of my favorite prospects eligible for the 2012 NFL Draft and one of the most dynamic playmakers in the nation that no one really talks about.

As the article points out, Wilson and Virginia Tech don’t play a very tough schedule this year, one that includes a featured non-conference game against the Pirates of East Carolina, who are a tough football team but not exactly comparable to Florida State playing Oklahoma.

In the article, Wilson talks about five goals that he has taped inside his locker at Virginia Tech. They are as follows:

1. Average more than 100 yards and 1 rushing TD per game

2. Earn 1st Team All-ACC and All American honors as a running back

3. Have a game of more than 260 yards rushing

4. Top 1,700 yards and 20 touchdowns this season

5. No fumbles

This is a pretty outstanding list of accomplishments, some that Wilson is well on his way to earning. He is averaging 129 yards rushing and just over one touchdown per game, and is currently on pace for 1,548 yards and 16 touchdowns if he keeps it up.

Wilson is a great playmaker, and there is no disputing that, but he is already averaging about 21 touches per game and I’m not sure I see that figure increasing by a significant amount, and he’s already doing all he can by averaging over six yards per carry. If Virginia Tech gives him about five to seven more carries per game, I could see him reaching the numbers he set up.

This is a player who has blazing speed and playmaking ability, and he obviously has a lot of confidence in his abilities. I know he has the ability to be a great NFL player someday, possibly even as soon as next year.

The nation will be exposed to Wilson and the Hokies when they host Clemson on ESPN2 next weekend.
