Miami Hurricanes Beat Ohio State: RB Lamar Miller Emerging
The Miami Hurricanes beat down #6 ranked Ohio State in Miami on Saturday thanks in large part to an impressive performance from redshirt Sophmore running back Lamar Miller who has shown in back to back weeks to be an emerging top candidate for the early part of the 2012 or 2013 N.F.L. draft.
Running backs are one of the positions where staying in school isn’t particularly important because young running backs often make the quickest impact in the league and the biggest adjustment for them is pass blocking. Lamar Miller headlines a talented Miami class. Last year Miller was impressive in limited duty. He had 108 carries for 646 yards (6.0 yards per carry). This year, early, he has been even better. When he played Maryland in the first game of the season he carried the rock 18 times for 119 yards (6.6 yards per carry) and a touchdown with a long 41 yard scamper.
Yesterday vs Ohio State he had 26 carries for 184 yards (7.1 yards per carry), with a long 54 yard run. Miller has good size, listed at 5’11 and 212 pounds. Miller entered Miami as the #80 prospect as ranked by rivals.com. The local Miami product and top notch sprinter in high school (ran a personal best of 10.56 in the 100 meter dash….faster than Sinorice Moss, Adrian Peterson, Devin Hester, Sam Shields, and others all ran in track). Millers speed has translated into the College game where he has shown an impressive speed/size ratio and been productive. Miller could use more practice in the passing game. He has only 14 receptions the past two seasons, and this year his three receptions have only gone for four yards.
Still, Miller is making a name for himself and could be a first or early second day pick when he decides to enter the N.F.L. draft if he can continue to shred defenses like he just did to Ohio State on Saturday.
For Ohio State it was just another bad day in a year full of them. The Buckeyes are down, but not out. The Buckeyes are a very loaded team full of N.F.L. prospects headlined by Center Michael Brewster who is the best center prospect in the nation.
Sayre’s intial scouting report
50 Mike Brewster (Senior), C, 6’5″ 305
Bar none, the best center prospect in the 2012 crop of players. Brewster is entering his fourth year as the starting center for the Buckeyes, and has been a rock for that offensive line. Former freshman All American and a technician on the offensive line. Enters his senior year after being considered a first round talent as a junior. Brewster will likely be the top ranked interior lineman heading into the 2012 draft barring injury, and there’s really not a whole lot you can say about him. He is solid as a rock, durable, reliable, smart, and he is a team leader. Add to that the requisite NFL size, and a degree from one of the most prestigious universities in the United States, and you have yourself a top of the line NFL prospect.
