Buffalo Bills Vs Kansas City Chiefs: Chiefs Start Slow. Bills Find Quality Tight End?

facebooktwitterreddit

I had some internet problems right before the Bills-Chiefs game started which was unfortuante because I planned on doing a detailed “what to watch for” the Bills and Chiefs.

The two biggest questions I had for the Bills so far look answered.

#1 Can the Bills Dline stop the run?

Kyle Williams had an All Pro caliber season last year, but other than that the front seven really struggled. This year the Bills got back former Ravens Dwan Edwards and also expected grwoth from Torrel Troupe and Alex Carrington. The biggest (literally) addition was third overall pick Marcel Dareus.

The Chiefs came into this game being the best rushing team in the league last year, vs the worst (which was the Bills). So far the battle belongs to the Buffalo Bills defense. The run defense looks much improved. Marcel Dareus is an absolute monster. And the new addition at linebacker, Nick Barnett has also made a big difference. Kyle Williams is still playing well. Troupe is inactive for this game.

If the Bills run defense is as good as it looks early in this season the Bills have a real shot at being a decent team this year. They have a fairly good offense and a good secondary (in the top five in passing last year, might have been number one in yardage).

Update: Right after I posted this the Chiefs had a few big runs in their two minute offense. The Bills were having a little trouble with the spread out looks the Chiefs were showing the Bills before running some draw plays.

Do the Bills have anyone at Tight End?

Before the game I would have said no. Neither team actually. But so far early in this game, the tight ends have been the most impressive players on the field it seems. Scott Chandler has a couple of big catches and a touchdown. Leonard Pope has some nice catches and nearly had a nice 20 something yard touchdown reception, but it was over ruled (not a coaches’ challenge. It’s the new Every touchdown is reviewable rule).

What to watch for in the second half?

Matt Cassel is playing with sore ribs and without Jon Baldwin or Tony Moeaki. Do the Chiefs have enough offensive weapons to make a comeback. At the same token can the Bills play with a lead. Last year the Bills were very good at having a “good ol college try at coming back”. Can they play with a lead? Can the Chiefs find their run game?
