Oklahoma RB Dominique Whaley Bursts Into National Spotlight

The Oklahoma Sooners are the number one team in the country for a reason–they are supremely talented and have a great coaching staff. Apparently that talent is literally walking into the football complex, as former Langston (NAIA) running back Dominique Whaley has had a huge Spring and got an opportunity on Saturday afternoon to show what he could do.

Whaley made the most of his opportunity by carrying the ball 18 times for 131 yards and a whopping four touchdowns.

According to an article which was written two days ago, just a day before Whaley made everyone look twice, he is 5’10” 210 pounds and runs a 4.4 second 40 yard dash.

Despite those measurables and his obviously incredible work ethic, nobody on the team seemed to know who this guy was. He started making plays at Spring practice and soon earned a role as the featured back in the Oklahoma offense, giving the team another dimension to an already high-powered offensive attack.

You really have to check out this article, which in a way predicted what would happen on Saturday when Oklahoma stuck it to Tulsa. They played like the best team in the country, and this walk-on and former NAIA running back helped lead the way with his four rushing touchdowns.

Obviously Oklahoma can’t play a team like Tulsa every week, so there will be ups and downs, but this is a player who has performed from day one when he walked on to the football program.

OU starting quarterback and Heisman candidate Landry Jones said it best:

“He’s an incredible athlete,” said Sooners quarterback Landry Jones. “He kind of came out nowhere and made a name for himself in spring ball… Sometimes the five stars don’t work out, and sometimes the zero stars turn out to be five stars in college.”
