New York Giants Lose Marvin Austin For the Season: New Stadium Is Built on an Ancient Indian Burial Ground

The New York Giants P.R. Department has released a statement today to confirm the rumors that the New Meadowlands Stadium is built on an ancient Indian burial ground.

“It has come to our attention through the Native American for Hollowed Land Foundation that we have indeed built our new stadium on an old ancient Indian burial ground. We blame the contractorsy for this oversight and we will try to rectify the situation immediately”.

What’s unclear is why the Giants have faced through such tribulations since changing stadiums while the cohabitant New York Jets have seen only prosperity. Rumor is Rex Ryan worships the foot goddess (too low and too easy?) Pie De Sol.

While this opening to this post is completely false it would go a long ways in explaining why the Giants have had such a tumultuous ride the past two seasons,  since they moved into the new stadium. Last season, in their first practice on their new field Kick Returner/Punt Returner Domenik Hixon was lost for the season, which left the Giants without a qualified return man and Giants fans suffered through an abysmal viewing experience anytime a New York Giants player fielded a kickoff or punt last season. But he was just the first of many WR who would see their season come to an untimely end.

What also happened last year was the Giants third round pick (considered a second round prospect with the upside of a first round prospect had he stayed in college at LSU), Chad Jones was in an accident that may possibly cost Jones his entire career. Early in the season, the Giants lost Mathais Kiwanuka, in a contract year, to a herniated disk.  The Giants had a rash of injuries at the WR position (Domenik Hixon was already hurt), losing Steve Smith (now with the Eagles), former 3rd round pick and training camp sensation, Ramses Barden (currently still on the P.U.P. list), Hakeem Nicks (just the final game of the season), and preseason senstaion (and possible #3 WR this year), Victor Cruz.

The Giants also had the meltdown at the Meadowlands vs the Eagles, and another late season collapse. One of epic proportion. Are the Giants cursed? I didn’t believe it, but this preseason has happened.

This year was looking up as the Giants were lauding for having an excellent draft, but once free agency started and the lockout ended the curse came roaring back. Rookie draft pick, Prince Amukamara, began his Giants career with a short hold out before breaking his foot and likely missing the first two months of the season on his very first day of practice with his new team. Then the Giants lost Steve Smith and Kevin Boss (not a curse, perhaps closer to poor planning). And watched as the Ex-Giants excellent WR Plaxico Burress signed with locker room foes the New York Jets.

Then Monday nights preseason game vs the Bears happened. And, predictably (if you believe in curses), another slew of injuries occurred. The Giants lost second round pick, Marvin Austin for the entire season. Marvin Austin missed the entire season last year because of an NCAA suspension. The fear with Austin now is that he’ll be rusty when he returns and may never be the player the Giants thought they were getting when they drafted him in the second round of April’s draft. The impact on this season is not great, as he was buried on the depth chart behind Chris Canty, Linval Joseph, and Rocky Bernard (plus Tuck, Kiwanuka, and Paul who all take snaps at DT).

Worse news came from the loss of cornerback Terrell Thomas. A cornerback primed for a big season (also in his contract year), when he tore his A.C.L. after being leg whipped by his own teammate Jason Pierre Paul (no one’s blaming you, buddy!).  Terrell Thomas is the real big loser here as he was about to get Paid and now will likely have to settle for a deal well below the market value he would have held in free agency (or to the Giants) had he played well again this year. The awful night was compounded by the loss of reserve cornerback Brian Witherspoon is playing well in preseason. Oh, also the Giants have lost CB Bruce Johnson for the season.

The Giants once in great position at cornerback will now be looking at the scrap heap to put together a secondary.

The only beneficiary of all of this mess is former first round pick Aaron Ross who was likely to seem a dramatically reduced role this year with the presence of Prince Amukamara, the signing of Tyler Sash to play the third safety role in the Giants defense and the return of Deon Grant who played that role last year.

Ancient indian Burial Ground? or Does Aaron Ross have the finest vodoo coll collection known to man? Either way, Tom Coughlin’s job could depend on how well the team is able to fill the holes in the secondary and bounce back from a catastrophic preseason.
